My buddy's n scale Grand Lac Sub will be no more after the last operating session this weekend gone. 4 years in the making, and sadly now condemned due to a house move. Enjoy a few views.
A beautiful layout. A shame to see it go. Hopefully he will get the enjoyment of building something new after the move. Thanks for sharing the pics!
So, what's he going to do with it? As said above, it's a shame to see it go. Lots of great work there.
Well... the problem is that it's all been built in a loft, and the size of what can be removed depends on whether it'll fit through the loft access hatch. That lovely single track section across the Stewart River will be saved. Some of the rest of the layout is a bit too wide. Trees , buildings , switches, scenic details, under board electricals, etc, should all be salvageable for the next layout. Sadly Harris Yard is to be dismantled. I used to be Yardmaster, emptying the arrival tracks, stocking the departure tracks , shuffling cars, placing cabooses in the caboose track, and getting motive power out through service and back onto trains. Sigh....
That looks like a recent Broadway Limited release. Paragon 4? I have two in Southern paint, but unfortunately they are acting up - I am swearing off BLI. Well, so I say now anyways. The layout looks like it was probably a lot of fun to operate. Hopefully something new can be built. Tough to see a good layout go, but if the builder is anything like me, then there will ALWAYS be some kind of idea in the back of their mind about what can be built.
You are right on both accounts. It's big sister (RSD-7) is from the same stable and is another Gem. No beef with any manufacturer, btw, i've been very lucky (since 1998!!) We have plans for the next, hatched in the 'pub' over a few drinks...My mate and missus's new home is a stone built 1800's Midland Railway Station too!
Nice. Sad to know it is going to be demolished. Hopefully he will consider a modular type of construction, for a future layout. The possibility for moving is always there....
When I seen the title to this thread I was hoping it wasn’t us saying good bye to another member. I almost didn’t want to know. But thankfully it wasn’t. Still sad to see a beautiful layout go away.
A sad story to be sure but some advice I received a long time ago from someone who mentored me in the hobby has proven to be true time and time again. That advice was that the term 'permanent layout' is an oxymoron. Ther is no such thing. Sooner or later all layouts meet their demise. It is, therefore, best to plan for the inevitable and incorporate modular design into the layout. No section longer than six feet nor wider than two feet is best but three feet in width is usually doable. Think of carrying a module down an enclosed stairway and making a right (or left) turn at the bottom. Layouts can be donated to MR clubs for set up in house or can be temporarily setup at malls or Libraries, churches, fire department social halls, etc. and act as goodwill ambassadors for the hobby. A special plaque should be displayed telling the layout's story and tribute of who built it.
I Wholeheartedly Disagree ! As long as I am alive my layout goes where I go at the turn of a key ! When I die THERR can be sold 'intact' along with the tittle to THE RV ! .
Excellent! In the past, I had a Mossberg 12 gauge, Chihuahua for my ears, and my loyal Bull terrier. Nowadays I live opposite the Cop Shop....
Our Chihuahua is the alarm system, not a security system. And unfortunately, the false alarm rate is a bit higher than we'd like. A friend of ours has nick-named him "Doorbell".
