That's the Aerotrain in St Louis at the museum, correct? I saw it about 8 years ago and it seemed to be in a lot better condition. Can you confirm the date of the second photo?
Was at the Museum Of Transport two years ago, old engine was off the beaten path where not readily accessible and could not see too well, I dare say may be in that state.
The Aerotrain and the New York Central's articulated Xplorer seem similar to me. The Xplorer was built by Pullman and Baldwin was chosen to supply the locomotive. The Xplorer too failed. Here it is stored at Traveler's Rest, SC in July 1969, long out of service. [Not my photo]
Wow. If that's the case, very sad indeed. There is another Aerotrain at the railroad museum in Green Bay, in pretty good shape. Are there others extant?
Thank you! Whatever happened to the trailing cars in the trainsets...the ones with the tail fins? I don't think either museum has one.
I don't remember seeing one in St. Louis. Never been to Green Bay Museum. On Google Earth it looks like they only have two regular coaches. Could not find anything that looks like this on the grounds out in the open.
I guess then that the two power units and only four coaches were saved. Here is a full set on the NYC>
Man those trains look weird !! hahaha Really cool though at the same time. I have never seen anything like it myself. The Explorer one i would like a model of
There were only two Aerotrains, but actually there were three EMD LWT-12 locomotives. The first was built for the Rock Island, which was buying Talgo cars from ACF. The other two were built for GM's own Aerotrain demonstrators, which bombed, and wound up being sold to The Rock for pennies on the dollar. Yes, #3 is the NMT unit at Kirkwood, Mo. The third locomotive went the way of most things that look like a 1957 Oldsmobile.
