Interesting... "Wagon Top" box cars get their name from the way the sheet metal curves continuously from the vertical side walls, over the top, like the canvas top on a covered (horse/mule/ox drawn) wagon. The photo is kinda small, but the caboose does not appear to share the same construction. So why do they have the same nomenclature? Or does it just not show well in the photo?
Yes, it's a wagon top caboose with the curved/curving roof as you describe. I have one of these Fox Valley models in Chessie System. Here's a page about the prototype: https://www.american-rails.com/tops.html
I wish that I was aware that limited production had become the norm when these were made. Being an old skool N Scaler, I didn't know that things had changed. This one is on eBay Buy It Now at $59.99 which is far more than I want to pay.
Another downside, for me at least, - prices like this make me very hesitant to weather the models. I bought them to run them, not to collect them, but still I am hesitant.
That's a really good point and it's a tricky question. I lightly weather only cars that I paint, leaving all others in factory freshness. I actually like the clean look. I have some old N cars from the late '60s and early '70s that I weathered as a kid and I so regret it. Happily, I've been able to find replacements for those that I like most.
My railroad still washes all equipment regularly, and shoots vandalizing miscreants after they are made to wash dirty railcars and scrub all misapplied paint off the property. Hmmm, that latter point might make for a great rail scene! That said, I truly admire the talent many have for realistically portraying the sad state of affairs WRT 1:1 rolling stock "decoration" today. It is history, whether we like it or not, but I'd just as soon turn that page ASAP.
Like you I bought my stuff to run...not to collect them for my heirs to make $$ on when I die. I will enjoy them to the end ! Weather them...run them till they don't run anymore...buy new ones. Wash...rinse..repeat ! If my heirs make enough selling my train stuff after i die to buy themselves a Starbucks coffee after my funeral..I did good !
I wanted to be sure this eBay weathered beauty didn't get away. $12.99 plus shipping .... and minus trucks evidently. This was at one time Atlas Item 2288 from 1967 with trucks.
When the seller posted this the first time, I think he was hopeful at that $ . Minitrix N Gauge 51 3586 00 Silo Wagon 4-achs. BASF Plastics Boxed Brand New | eBay Starting bid: US $49.99 [ 0 bids ] Bidding has ended on this item. The seller has relisted this item or one like this. It is now DECEMBER 2, and it has been a week since the sellers initial posting of this item shows how impatient the seller is. As well as some other sellers are, as they think that they’re wanting Instant Gratification ! The photo of this happens to be in my original posting as I stated about price gouging. #9453.. Tom

Well, the blue Fox Valley B&O Wagontop caboose sold for $40.50 Shipped. A fair price I suppose, but too rich for me. The red one sold for $145.49 Shipped.
With crypto on the ropes, maybe we can create a new currency based on N Scale cabooses. Get in on the ground floor folks, it's "Cryptoboose". We'll set up in the Bahamas of course.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/2348074555...zguTeDJtjrwEyjVXNbj6SEcfE=|tkp:Bk9SR5KhzImcYQ $450 for Trainworx N scale Optimus Prime? Must be great crack this guy is smoking!!
Not really. That's about the going price for any of those first run show trucks that Trainworx released. I seen the Duel rig sell for $465 in the last few seconds several years ago. I think a Smokey and Bandit rig sold for more than $500+. The seller isn't the one that's smoking crack, it'll be the buyer.
