Due to a work contract falling through at the last minute, there is a high degree of certainty that I will be working 6 hours away in Knoxville, TN this spring and summer for about a 3 month period. I can’t spend 3 months in a hotel room without hobby entertainment. I reached out to the local NMRA division president, so I thought I would post here, too…. How is the hobby scene in Knoxville? Tell me about hobby shops in the area…., railfan hotspots, etc. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
There is the Knoxville Model Railroad Club in Oak Ridge TN at the Children Museum. It is an all scale club. they have work sessions on Tuesday and Thursday starting around 10:00 AM. Look them up, great groups of model railroaders.. They have a Facebook page. Dennis
There's the Three Rivers Rambler train, Ph: 865-524-9411 Home - Three Rivers Rambler - Knoxville, Tennessee The CSX yard (former L&N) likely remains visible from UT property. NS's John Sevier Yard is northeast of town off Rutledge Pike. Some years back, NS closed the hump. I don't know what's worked there these days.
If you do visit Oak Ridge, I recommend visiting the American Museum of Science and Energy where they tell the story of the Manhattan Project. While not really railroad related (well, the Manhattan Project was serviced by the railroad, so there's that), it's very interesting. Looks like you'll just miss the Crossville Model Railroad Club, a little over an hour a way, because their lease was recently terminated. You might want to check their webpage though when you're in the area to see if they've found a new home yet.
