Back in the day around Christmastime, at work we'd receive cans of Hubs Peanuts from our vendors. Mmmmm.
Up close and personal with an operating RS-2. Not Alco but the first MLW road switcher. Gotta love that 244 sound! In the rain, too! Exporail, Diesel Weekend locomotive parade, September 2015.
When I got my Atlas UP RSC-2 in 1968 or 1969, I saw a picture of the prototype and it bugged me that mine didn't have the box behind the cab on the walkway so I added one. I believe I read somewhere that it is a battery box but I'm not sure. It also bugged me that the hand rail did not curve up and join the carbody above (Mehanotehnika just ran it straight into the cab side) so I cut it at the stanchion and glued it back on, raised up. These changes are shown below, done 55 years ago: Kids! Doug
On the RSC-2/RS-2 the battery box is under the frame, between the trucks. The RSC-3/RS-3 has the battery box on top of the walkways on the short hood side of the cab. The box you see there is some sort of equipment box. On those I've seen it's somewhat shorter and has a pump on top of it. Maybe yours is an extra cab heater or a Watchman heater (oil-fired engine block heater). I like how you modified the handrail. On a lighter vein, to be really prototypical for an RSC-2, you need a black stain fanning out down the side of the cab under the fuel filler...
Thanks Mike. I knew I was unsure of the box's function. . I do remember that the picture I saw of the prototype did show the box with a larger top part and smaller lower part, which is why I made it like it is. Oh, and your mention of a black stain under the fuel filler reminds me I did have it fairly heavily weathered, with a lot of blackish stains on it, at one time but THAT started bugging me that I did that to one of my A1G locomotives and I removed the weathering. I did leave the other modifications - dark gray handrails, light gray trucks, and red stripe on the sill. And, Kadee couplers, of course. Doug
Don't want to derail the thread, but what caught my eyes was the rear of 1205, BNSF's first (only?) fuelcell engine. Do you by any chance have additional photos of it? Maybe you could post them in another thread?
From 03/28/1983 at Binghamton, NY, NYS&W RS-3 104. She was originally D&H 4117 and met her fate at the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, scrapped in 1996.
From 1978 at Knoxville, TN, L&N C-420 1354 is looking quite spiffy in her Family Lines paint. She's former SAL 113 and later found a home on the Arkansas & Missouri where she still works today as their 46.
New thread in the railfan photos forum. Cheers! https://www.trainboard.com/highball/index.php?threads/hydrogen-the-fuel-of-the-future.153274/
