just want to post something to see how everything goes, and no better way than to say Awesome shots everyone, esp love the NS SD70 in the 'stealth' livery
My understanding is that in some unit trains specialy made cars are semi permanently coupled together. I believe this is frequent in the coal and other similar industry such as iorn or.
we permantly couple coal hoppers here in NSW (Australia) into 3/6 and 8 car units, also with our wheat hoppers while not permanently coupled, the rake has a number and a maintenance cycle as one rake not per wagon. most intermodal equipment is 5 packs (articulated) and some steel carrying cars are 2 packs (non articulated) the reason is it removes slack adjustment and repeatative maintenance (such as brake pipe hose connections, couplers etc)
Adam, I never realised when I opened this topic that it would be still running 3 years later with over 700 posts to it. Members have come and gone, some have even passed away yet this thread still lives. Great to see you started at the beginning and viewed at 36 pages of posts . Lets keep this topic alive by continuing to post pics of unit trains.
Here comes 5 Milw SD40-2's as they creep off the Renslow Trestle obeying the restricted speed of 25MPH.

I've had this thread on the back burner while i stock up on Deluxe Innovations NS/Conrail Bethgon's and get my stock of Trinity RD-4's up into the 100's... There's a show first of november which will give me access to a layout big enough for them all... I hope!
Love this thread as can be witnessed by my two or three bumps. May I suggest you edit the first post with a link to where the pictures start again so new folks to trainboard know there is more here? This is a much older vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc3Eh21KKCc I'll have a few newer pics / vids by tomorrow.
