Was cruising craigslist yesterday, Seen a n scale layout with layout 2 x4' it says has 12 turnouts and a big box of train stuff and cars for $20.00. He just wants it gone,he is moving with a new job and has no room for it. So my son left this morning to pick it up. Will know in an hr or so if its a great buy or just junk.

Well, if you get all that, and it's still not worth twenty bucks, then somebody screwed things up big time. I don't know how someone could screw things up that much, but it's bound to be hilarious. Twenty bucks' worth of hilarious.

    You'll make out all right.

I think we did better than good. Since I do not know a lot about n scale or any scale for that matter. There is a powercab DCC starter set never even opened. and an atlas GP39-2 phase1 with sound and esu what ever that is. and the 2x4 layout and 43 cars 3 transformers.

When I was a kid... back in 1971... my parents decided to move from Maryland to Florida and essentially sold off all of my HO stuff and a 5 speed bike for $20 bucks... At least back then $20 bucks was worth something. Can't imagine how urgent the seller on Craig's list needed to dump the stuff you got because it was practically a gift from what you stated was included.
I'm sure there is a back story to that... may be a sad or tragic one.

He told my son he was a mechanical engineer, his job here was finished and the house he rented for the last 15 years was moving out. He was renting an apartment in ND and was selling of anything he could not take with him. The trains were for him and his GF'S son who he no longer sees. His company builds natural gas electric plants, and they have 3 to build in north central USA. He said when he retires he wants to get into G scale.

Soon as i can find where i left my camera will post photos.

The GP39-2 is one of the newest Atlas's locomotive releases - list price is $249.95 - the 'street price' is about 170.00 to 185.00.
I'd say you made out very well!!

I really did not realize how small n gauge is. The detail on the cars are great for the size. My problem is i need a good magnifying setup to look at them to repair anything. Hitting 70 in a few months and close up just dont do it anymore.
and still looking for the camera it probably right in front of me and i keep overlooking it.

Hey Dash, I'm 83 and still work N-Scale. Get a magnifying workbench light, stick your nose on the edge and look through to build or repair your stuff. We're only as old as we allow ourselves to be. (y)

Holy smokes! When I saw $20 I figured you'd got a good deal on some older N stuff. Sounds like you got some high-end DCC stuff and the equipment to run it.

    Well Done!

The NCE Powercab is as good as it gets. And a fair bit more than $20. You are the luckiest man in America, I suggest it's time to go buy a lottery ticket.

Well tried on a test track Me and my son hooked up last night. The powercab powered up fine and the Atlas Gp9 would do nothing. Tested the track it had 13.79V AC. No lights no sound no movement.
Hooked up a straight dc to the track with the power cab removed and the train sound went off as if to start and then it moved fine forward and backward. Has me puzzled. Went and ordered a ECoS command station will try that when it comes in next week.

I'm a Digitrax guy so I'm not familiar with NCE but does it have a "Track Power" button? The unit can be on and just not sending power to the tracks.

When it turns on it has almost 14V AC to the track. I tested with the fluke. Called NEC have to setup the test track soon and call them back and he is going to walk me thru it. He said since it has voltage to the track has to be something else. Will let you know.

Nec called back again and he had me run thru a few tests and said the encoder in the GP9 was defective and I would need a ESU tester and programmer. So I called English trains in montoursvile pa and ordered them . They will be in , in a few hrs. So I will pick them up today and see what happens.
