When I dismantled the old Andersley Western layout, I kept the bridge which went over the main yard, although I had no intention of using it on the new layout. However, I was moving some stuff around under the layout and found the bridge and just placed it on the baseboard until I found what I was looking for. When I came to put it away again, I realised that it may look ok just where I had placed it, to hide the tracks a bit as they disappear into the hidden yard! The pics show it in position, but not yet fixed, as it needs to be extended a little towards the backscene (not yet done). Question: should I put another set of pillars near the baseboard edge and detail the end or block off the end with a high section of the fascia board when fitted? Anyone know what the cross-section of a bridge looks like, to make it appear reasonable?
Alan- You never know what you'll wish you'd saved, until you find a use for what you no longer have around! A situation like this, shows why I always save stuff for a while........ If I were to cast a vote that counted, perhaps the fascia idea? Somehow, having the raw bridge end out there just doesn't fit what a person would encounter. It looks like something is missing or unfinished. You'd not actually see such an angle, due to abutment or? Boxcab E50
I agree with Boxcab E50, fascia, as if it were the first part of the bridge which has an embankment behind it. txrocket
Alan, I would go for another set of pillars. By the way, very realistic looking threes on your layout, I like them. Paul
Looks good, Alan! That overpass really adds to the scene and gives it a sense of depth and demension that was really not there before. I agree on the additional set of support columns between the edge of the layout and the nearest track is needed. Those trees are very nice! What are we looking at there? Russ
Alan,I would go with the bridge support columns because (IMHO) raising the fashia at that point would block viewing the layout.
Ok, I made another set of pillars and installed them on the edge of the baseboard. I then made a temporary fascia from card and attached it temporarily to the baseboards. here are pics of the effect:
The high section was then removed from the fascia, and these pics show the difference: I will definitely go with the latter, as it looks much better open, I feel. Will probably add a bit more detail to the exposed end of the bridge. Thanks for the suggestions, they prompted me to try both methods
I think you made the right decision Alan. Now the only problem is now you have me looking for a place on my layout to put a simular bridge.
Welll... These are what i could find: Bridge Construction 1 Bridge Construction 2 Bridge Construction 3 Bridge Construction 4 You may have to look through the sites a bit. Hope they help! Oh yea... Layouts looking good!
