I painted a SSW gp40. I used a windex wash and a white film covers it. Which brings it back a coat of flat or gloss???? Thanks, Loco1999 [ September 05, 2005, 03:54 PM: Message edited by: loco1999 ]
I am not sure how to do this. I have heard of some way to restore it, but I am not sure how. I will move this thread to the Inspection Pit so it will get more exposure from the other scales. It is a good question and the more input from the other modelers, the better.
looks like a unit that has been in the California sun for a while. I don't think it looks too bad, but then again i can't see all the detail.
LOL Flash, was thinking the same thing.Could be an interesting thing to try.......... Loco, this isn't the unit you custom painted is it?
Flash: You can use 91% iso-propyly alcohol, or you can use blue windshield washer solution which will give you a more muted fading of the color than the alcohol or windex. I use the blue windshield washer solution as the resultant fading is more controllable than the other two solutions. BTW, Rick Ryourstone recommends using the blue windshield wash soulution. Stay cool and run steam.....
I started with a undec shell. It used to look like... I sprayed windex on it and let it sit. Then rinsed. When it dries it turns white. Then dipped it in 91% alcohol. Then rinsed. When it dries it turns white. If you rinse with water the color comes back. When it dries it turns white. I tried dullcote, It didn't really help. I think gloss may have been the answer. I tried some gloss after the dullcote and it got grayer, oh well, It's drying. Thanks, Loco1999
How do you apply? Spray, brush, immerse? Do you let it dry or wash it off? </font>[/QUOTE]Bruce: You could either spray it on or brush it on and let it dry by itself. Stay cool and run steam......
Loco1999: You should have used just the windshield blue washer solution or the windex with a very light spray and then let it dry. That would have been enough. Stay cool and run steam.....
Bob, do you just spray with full-strength windex? Or is it mixed with something else? (This windex thing is new to me!) Tony
This gets better all the time. Really excellent job. Hope you will post it for WNFF. I particularly like the repaint patch job on the cab number. Very realistic!
\ Tony: Dilute the Windex or blue windshield wiper solution. I prefer the blue windshield washer solution to the windex. You can also use iso-propyl alcohol if you are careful about spraying it on the loco or car to be weathered. Here is a website that describes the alcohol method. It is an excellent source for the "faded" loco or car type of weathering: Faded loco or car weathering technique Stay cool and run steam.....
Flash, It's where the decal was blocking the windex, an fortunate accident. I still haven't done the trucks or fuel tank, It's on a frame borrowed from 7621. Thanks, Loco1999
It looks wonderful. SP units always look really beat to hell like that. I am going to have to start keeping a jar of windex in the modelling box.
