Just a note to inform folks that the NECR ( formerly the Central Vermont Ry, A CN subsidiary) has experienced major washouts along the Conneticut River in Vermont. The washouts extend from Brattleboro to Bellows Falls. Amtrak service has also been suspended north of Springfield MA. It is believed the line will remain closed until Friday at the earliest. The Providence & Worcester, Vermont Railway and Amtrak have loaned work equipment to assist the NECR with these major washouts and crews are working around the clock to reopen the line. This line is a major routing for energy products, lumber, paper, feed and steel from Canada to New England and Eastern NY markets. Luckliy, the washouts were found by track patrols and no derailments resulted. About six years ago a similar washout sent two engines and a number of cars plummeting into the river at a nearby washout.
I always worry, when this type of event happens to smaller companies. About how it will effect the company finances. Sure hope it's not a major blow? Can you post any follow up information? Boxcab E50
NECR is one of Rail America's more profitable properties. Still I'm sure it will put a "hurting" on things. When the line is reopened this weekend the backlog of traffic will probably overwhelm the crews that have to marshall the traffic and get it switched at local industries.
Hi All. I have a strong interest in the New England Central & former Central Vermont railroads. Anyone here got any photos of either. Thanks. Regards. Pete H. Aussie
New England Central was a nice break from New England Southern, Guilford and Conrail when I lived in NH. I got a lot of good pictures of them in Palmer MA back in the mid 90's. Did Rail America let them keep that nice blue and yellow scheme or are they in the red, blue and silver we see everywhere eles?
The NECR website has a nice map showing its route with all interchanges. http://www.railamerica.com/railmaps/NECR.htm
