Robert Athearn's Rio Grande Western Railroad: Rebel of the Rockies. This is a first-rate work of historical scholarship, a legacy of Judge McCarthy's enlightened leadership -- the railroad commissioned the work, made all of the archives available, facilitated interviews, etc. -- and didn't require Athearn to clear the manuscript with them before publishing it. A fine book, fine management, and -- in those days -- a railroad without parallel.

Thode, Jackson C. 2001. A Century of Passenger Trains... And Then Some. Denver, CO: Rocky Mountain Railroad Club [originally published 1972].

A reprint is now available of Thode's hard-to-find history of Rio Grande passenger service. Included are a postscript describing the final days of passenger service, a synopsis and detailed index of passenger train names, and a bibliography. There are nearly 200 photographs (in black and white). The book is attractively bound with a hard cover in Rio Grande gold and silver. Thode worked for the Rio Grande from 1936 until 1978, where he rose to the position of Chief Budget Officer. He was also custodian of the road's historical records and one of the founding members of the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club. This is an indispensable work for any fan of D&RGW varnish.

Copies of this book are available from the Colorado Railroad Museum's bookstore for $39.95. Purchasing the book from CRM helps support the museum's railroad preservation activities.

You know you're a rabid railfan when.... ....You lust over books and model locos rather than supermodels...

George L Beam and the Denver and Rio Grande By Jack Thode.
Vol 1 and 2. An incredible look back on the D&RG(W) equipment people, places and more back to the 1890's!!! ALL photos reproduced from the original Beam Glass Plate negatives!

Gotta check my collection and get some other titles. Sometime later Saturday though. Just shy of 1:10AM and I gotta get to bed!!!

    Rio Grande Books

I find them all of interest. Trying to get information over here is not exactly easy, so I find that all the books that I have been able to acquire each has their own bit of interest.
Still trying to get hold of copies of Rio Grand diesel volumn 1 and 2

    Hemi's Book

Hemi mentioned Rio Grande: Scenic Line of the World. It's by Dale Sanders and it's one of my favorites of the 1980's and 90's. It's also selling for over $150 and I only have a buck-fifty.

Robert LeMassena's Rio Grande: To The Pacific! is a good historical reference from Sundance Ltd. in 1974 with lots of big steam from the 40's. I grab it at the library whenever I can because of it's rarity.

    Looking for RIO Grande Book

I am looking for this specific above book.

Would anyone from you sell this book to me or tell me in which shop I could find it?
    Living in France doesn't help...

    Please let me know.

Rare birds indeed. V1 is somewhat easier to come by, but V2 is nearly impossible to find. Ebay sometimes gets them listed, but they can bring premium prices...

    James Griffen

Has anyone read the one by my friend Jim Griffen? He told me once he was working on a book. It looks like he finished it.

I saw it this week down at the CRRM, but I was in a hurry and didn't get a chance to read much.

Many of these are great. I personally like "Rio Grande Trackside with Jim Ozment" by James Sandrin.
