Yes, it is a staged photo. I just happened to have that location on my layout. The picture is taken from the old Olive Street Bridge (wooden) overpass right next to Tower 121 at the entrance to the engine terminal. The building is the Sears warehouse. The engines are the correct type, but not the same number as the picture, except for the U50D. I believe they are U50D/F7A/GP20/GP9/U25B. Normal Espee lashup, you know.
Thanks very much for the info Jerry! Just what I was lookin for. Can't wait to see your U50 when she's done. Thom
You'd best not waste any time getting ahold of Sunrise white metal parts. As of Jan. 1, they are no longer in production
Yeah, I noticed that some places did not have it in stock. It says at Internet Model trains that its on "back order". Where do you guys get them from, or where are they available? Thom
Triplex: I read that in one of the old Joe Strapac SP Annuals. If there was a higher number it was in the last 10 years or so of Espee independence. Like 1986 to 1996, or so; there might be a higher number there.
SP U-50 I repainted one in SP. I will try to get a photo for the board. If you are looking for a puller you will love this loco. It amazes other modelers at NTrak meets with it's pulling power.
Attached are a couple of snaps of an SP one I did from an undec some while ago. It was inspired from a Prototype photo. Although it's really outside my period(s) of interest I find them hard to resist. Runs well
UP U50 And because I was feeling weak-willed at the time I got another and made it into a UP version, again from a Proto pic. This has a slighly bowed long hood but runs well enough. Layout rebuilding means that it has yet to have the front pilot properly painted and attached plus the jewel headlights need fitting.
BTW, kitbashers, you can add GMM steps (ladder types on the sides) to make them more prototypical, too. You need big curves, though.
Who says you need to buy that part? (UDE light atop the cab) Why couldn't an enterprising (and crafty) modeler bend a piece of styene rod with some heat, cut, and file at an angle, then add a red lens?
These guys are totally out of my era, but looking at these pictures is making me think that I want one too! They sure are cool looking - must have been quite a sight seeing them in person at track speed! Are the models good runners? They must weigh a ton -- and be good pullers I'm assuming! sp4009 - does your post mean that Sunrise is back in business w/ the metal detail parts? There was a post over on Atlas that said they had hung it up and were not making any more product -- which I hope is not true !
