New IN-Progress VARR System Cars (Feedback Welcome)

Virginia Atlantic RR Jul 8, 2004

  1. Hola folks, time again for a few "In-Progress" shots of the two VARR System cars I am currently working on (I work slow, doing a car or two (or a loco) in a period of 4-8 weeks).

Both cars are at the "just decaled today" stage, and will require dullcoting and weathering before thyey will be complete.

First up, W&OD Atlas Precision Design Smoothside 50ft Boxcar:

And Second, a VARR Atlas Precision Design Smoothside 50ft Boxcar, in a darker VARR Blue than usual (similar to the Blue I've used for the VARR-owned shortline, the Winchester & Potomac). I have been having an internal debate with myself as to which VARR Blue (lighter or this new darker) to use here on out:

As always, I hope my friends here will provide feedback as to how they are coming along. Just remember that these are in-progress pics and not finished items :D

At least you're still VARR on here, no "System", which ain't easy to abbreviate. VASys? No.....

Anyway, you have changed the position of the logo and road name on the VARR car from your earlier cars. Personally, I'm partial to the logo over the reporting marks, but either is perfectly prototypical. [IMG]

  3. LOL, thanks TR. No worries, I'll always be VARR, even if my road gets a bit bigger than originally planned.

As for the change in Scheme for this car, I basically only did it that way because of the design of the car in question (Not much space on the Right side of these cars that isn't covered by the door when it's open(not that the models doors open, but you get my point)). Plus it gives the VARR fleet some of that desperately needed "Real World" variety. Heck, the real roads never seemed to do things the same way twice, LOL!

    VARR,
I prefer the old blue to this new darker blue. However, which ever color you prefer is really up to you.

I agree with the changing sides of the logo and words to fit the car. I know several railroads did that, depending on the car. Some even used different size heralds depending on the car type.

    VARR,

I really like the W&OD car. Nice RR look. Good color choice, IMHO. Wasn't the W&OD a real roadname at one time?

The darker blue would weather a lighter color, as in CSX, I think both shades are good, as the real world changes up slightly from time to time. And the lettering placement , as others noted, adds nice variety to a fleet.

Excellent. I especially like the W&OD car. Has that earlier era look to it. which brings up a question (And please forgive me if you have mentioned it before, I'm old and forgetful.)...

What time frame are you modelling? As I mentioned that W&OD looks older, but all your VARR stuff looks fairly modern.

    Jeff,
Welcome back, stranger! I've missed reading about your A&C Railroad around these parts. BTW, how IS your railroad going these days?

    VARR,

I like the "old school" look on the W&OD boxcar.

It's six of one, half-dozen of another as far as I'm concerned- they both look nice.

    Bob,
Things are going well, I've added a staging yard, and begun working on the town.

Newest acquisition is the Digitrax Zephyr that should arrive tomorrow!!!!!!

Good to hear! As I've mentioned some time back, I've set aside the N scale & returned to HO, and have added a third RS3 to the O&NE fleet. This gives me three RS3s, one RS1 and an S2 for the Chat Pile Line. Now, all I have to do is get one of 'em repainted to a new maroon & light gray paint scheme.

ANyway, back to the VARR cars..........have you any more pics to share with us? The way the Class 1s are going these days (more money to use their trademarks), freelance is getting more & more intriguing all the time.
