That photo might be a DD35 by the appearance of the fans, so a DDA40X shell would have the wrong fans.

    There is also a DD35A.

    I believe your shell is a DDA40X.

They are all big. I am sure someone has tried the kitbash.

The prototype photo would have to be a DD35 B unit, the only 'DD's produced were DD35 A & B's and DDA40X's. The DD40 was cataloged by EMD but never produced although that didn't stop Athearn doing it in HO. But it looks like it would be close enough. Beware though that the latest tooling shells may not match the old oversized ones.

i was thinking of picking up a older bachman or atlas gp40 or 35
unless there is a loco with a flat ended long hood out there

Intermountain's tunnel motors have have the flat ended long hood, don't they?

True, As someone posted above, that photo above is a DD35 B-unit.
But like someone said, EMD offered a loco in the catalog that no one bought--- and I think there is a valid place for modeling that.

So go ahead and model a DD40X B-unit.

Give Bachmann customer service a call. They may have a spare shell to send you.

Shucks. They must not have any new shells yet either. IIRC the Bachmannn shells may be fatter than the Kato ones.

Shouldn't the pass through be in the middle of the loco?

Was a DD35 shorter than the 40AX because you have ended up with two too many fans also.

    passthrough is set off center

the extra fan's are bugging me.

{Was a DD35 shorter than the 40Ax} i think it was shorter but i'm not building a dd335, i'am building the dd40-b unit that never made it into production

Ok, that makes sense. I was looking at the DD35 pictures above when I was comparing.

Cool project, but I'd have to agree there are a couple too many fans on the roof. Good luck with your progress.

IIRC, 88' rather than 96', just as the GP35 and SD35 were shorter than the GP40 and SD40.
