I've no idea how this thread will turn out. I do ask folks to keep it nice. Yes, feel free to be critical of the product but please keep it technical and accurate.
Due to budget constraints and a realty check I have not ordered / bought a loco in what I'm guessing is over two years.
The ones that I haven't ordered are:

    • DD40
    • GG1s
    • 4-8-8-4
    • SDXXs from Kato and FVM
    • SD45 from Kato
    • 3 of the 1940s/50s stream lined from Con Cor

    I have done is:

    • Paid off nearly 4k in credit card debt
    • Resolved issues with the IRS
    • Saved my mortgage
    • Had eye surgery.
    • Built a minor savings
The truth is I don't have a layout worthy of these or the room to store them or ... so over all life is good and I can dream.

Hanging On To My $ Also!

The INDIANA RAILWAY will not be buying ANY new locomotives, or rolling stock for that matter, for awhile. Money IS a little tight and I'm waiting until next year to see what the economy does. I think a bunch of us are going to see our standard of living take a hit!
Also I am NOT going to buy a FIRST RUN locomotive again, I don't care how much I want/need it!! I've been burnt too many times lately, when I bought the original issue of a locomotive and the *%@% thing doesn't run worth a hoot! The second or third issue ran great and I'm stuck with 2 or 3 models of the first issue. NEVER AGAIN!!!

I guess I'm getting more thrifty (read cheap) as I get older.

    DAVE RAMSEY For President!!!

Temporary hold in my railroad's budget also. Layout is gone and a new one will come forth, hopefully late this year. Switched eras up to 1972, so I DO need to buy some stuff. Once I get a job, that is...

PS congrats on the debt reduction Steve. That is SO IMPORTANT.

    Hmmmm....
Can't think of any that I wanted and didn't get.Maybe, that's my financial problem. Bought them all out right. None on credit. So-that's good. But the credit cards I do have have not been going down. Just havn't added to them. OK-enough personal stuff.

    Have a good one,
    Wolf

    Ok, let me see.....

    FVM ES44AC:
    • I really would rather them being more quiet.
    • Wanna compare and contrast with the Kato version.
    • Can't find them in the $50 bracket on my fav' online place for shopping.

    Atlas 8-40CW:
    • Can't find them in the $50 or $60 bracket on my fav' online place for shopping.

    The articulated steam engines:
    • Too expensive for me, right now.

I have not purchased any of the new releases in the past couple years. I'm not saying that I have not purchased any locos, I have, but they were not the latest or greatest on the market.

I really don't need and can't use any more locos on the layout.
I have two older releases on order.[IMG]

On a side note, the locos I will not buy again...
Bachmann Spectrum, and Athearn SD70's. When the Athearn SD70's came out, I was thrilled, but after purchasing a set of 5, only two run well enough to operate on my home layout, and of the other three, I was able to swap parts from the three to make two run good enough to run at train shows. Also, I compared the body features to a Kato version, and It is apparant the number board area is way too small, so some dimensions on the cab area must be off. The MoPac has decided to stick with Kato power for now. Also, I am repairing four older locos with new parts, rather than buy new for now...

I started NOT buying locos about three years ago when I decided that I only wanted so many trains around. It's the anal versus the OCD. The former wants to have everything remotely related to my roads of interest while the later experiences physical discomfort when too much "stuff" starts to accumulate and becomes, god forbid, disorganized. In my case, OCD started to take the lead (as it usually does). But, enough of the psycobabel....

I did NOT buy the latest Atlas CB&Q GP30's, GP35's and SD7's. I did not buy the second road number of the Kato CB&Q mikado. I did not buy any of the Kato GG1's after the initial DGLE five stripe release. I also did not buy any of the Atlas CGW releases, although the GP7's (two) and the GP30's (which ultimately were released in four road numbers, allowing a four unit lash up which is the only correct way to run them for the CGW) were very tempting.

Things I couldn't resist and DID buy:
All the right Kato locos for the passenger sets (i.e. the latest ATSF F7's for the Super Chief and El Capitan, the latest DRGW F3's and PA's for the CZ, the Tucsan E units and the aforementioned GG1 for the Broadway limited).
The DRGW SD45s, simply because they are such great looking locos.

Kudos to the OP for placing fiscal responsibility above the accumulation of trains. Right, wrong or whatever, in my experience buying Kato products is safest. They hold their value well and are the easiest to resell. I'm very conservative when it comes to buying steam and Intermountain products. I do not buy Bachman, Concor, Athern or Lifelike. Can I back that up with facts and logic? No....

Haven't bought the FVM GEVOs. I should, right? :)

    Why?
    1. Not enough money
    2. Focusing exclusively on scenery right now
    3. Have enough locos to keep me happy at the moment
    4. When I do have enough money, all the new locos today can be found on the used market for mega-cheap. :)

The last new (well, to me, anyway) locomotive was a Lifelike GP38-2 in MP colors- gotta have a companion for my MP '38 to run interchange freight with the Frisco.

I'm waiting for the Atlas GP7s in Frisco colors to come out, altho I have an undec Atlas I should paint & decal in SLSF livery.

No newer locos (or used one, either)- all available money is going into both a debt reduction and a house remodel (which we owe nada on, but Lowe's and Home Depot like to have money for their merchandise-go figure ;) :p)

I HAVE been doodling on plans for a new N scale layout that will go into a spare room once the remodel is done.

Now, I WOULD like to get some mroe GP38s and GP38-2s, esp. in Frisco livery, if and when I can find them..........

I haven't bought anything Alas in a few years becasue they are such a poor electrical design using the spring contacts for the motor leads.

I actually made 3 lists: Buy, Maybe, and Do Not Buy! The Buy list is locos that fit into the 90's SP roster, and some of the Japanese Bullet trains. The Maybe list includes steam, truck trailers(for those BLMA flats), and modern power, of which I've missed out on some of the Gevos and SD70ACe's. The Do Not Buy list is boxcars, gondolas, containers, and some oddball stuff like the GG1 that I would buy before just because I liked it. The economy finally caught up with me this year, and I've had to cut back some. Plus, I'm starting to realize that I've got more than enough.

Nice loco but the wrong hanrails and the missing third dynamic brake vent is a no go for me, if I was UP, CP or BNSF modeler I would be a buyer.

I don't buy any of the modern stuff really because it's too far out of my primary modeling interests and therefore not "necessary." I have also avoided some things that I thought were really cool but were just too far out of my primary interests, like the RDC with the jet engines.

I have been doing more re-working of what I already have, and also rehabilitation of junkers from swap meets. I have some things coming on orders in the next few months. The only reason they've gotten bunch up like this is that release dates keep getting pushed back on some of these items.

    To many to list..

The reason being I am trying to stay with NS and CSX..My C&HV has enough locomotives.

Not saying GATX and HELM GP38s lease units wouldn't be a welcome addition because I need 2 or 3..

    Atlas RS-1 M&St.L blue and gray (2 #'s)

Others on my wish list as well.

Lack of bucks. Despite what some might say, the MSRP and thus any amount discount on total price has crept up. In a tight economy, that only amounts to reduced sales.

Every locomotive i have seen in the shops. Why because what little money i have for trains(poor collage student here) should be go to building the layout not locomotives.

What are you two, Its my money and I choose not to buy an incorrect model. If Kato and Atlas do it right with there AC44 and CW40-8 that this will look out of place with, then so should the new guy who trying to compete with them.
