Love the humor, John! I've written about this kind of stuff in the past. Especially hypersonic parts needed for the Kato Mikado boiler. Usually I find the missing part stuck to my flannel shirt. A flannel shirt is just an indicator of how old is old.

Hey I have some fairly new flannel shirts in the drawer. Right next to the old woolen longjohns.

Meanwhile, that item which originally started the topic is still hiding. Did you ever feel as though it might be laughing at you? I sometimes feel such a scenario is possible.

What really irks me, is I set something down, right in front of me.
Turn around for 3 seconds, and it's gone!!

Absolute best way to find it:
Start looking for something else you lost recently, and still have not found.
Guaranteed to find something. Just not what you need this instant!!
    Seems to work for me.

What I want to see happen, is to leave the room for a while, then come back and find the model has assembled itself! Is there such a thing as a 'positive' gremlin?

Hoo-Hah - I feel your pain. Yup - but it hasnt stopped me from getting back into N again! This time it has to be for good, as I am quitting the 'bay (I always sold it all on there, when I changed my Scale of Trains) as they have now taken TaxID numbers, along with too many other changes. Anyway I did actually perform DCC surgery implant on the Lifelike SD7, successfully, followed by the Kato F unit. Of course the F unit front coupler decided to drop off, whereupon I spent 15 - 20 min trying to figure it out, trying to wonder who ever can put these cockamamie things on upside down, and then - BOING there goes half of the coupler itself - I didnt know it was two pieces! Down into the carpet world, now long hidden - gee - can I fabricate a silver front cover door now?
I keep thinking - one of these days I should buy one o them apron things that run from your lap, to the desktop, and catch those dang 'jumping parts', But then I will probably forget that its attached to the table, and get up, and destroy the whole shebang - ah well!

So far, it just hurts a little bit more getting down on my knees and positioning myself under the layout section for work. And, I am relying on an Optivisor rather than using it once in a while, and not finding things (my problem is inbred sloppiness, though), and, and and .................

I couldn't find a particular steam engine. In my mind, I decided one of three workmen that were doing work in another part of the basement swiped it. Before pointing a finger, I realized it was as unlikely a swipe as could be since it was N Scale and not as popular as the plus size models. Of course, I found it neatly tucked away on a shelf not usually used for such items a week later.

Well having just come off the old knees around the workbench and not finding the small drill bit that broke off, including using a big magnet, I now have concern for my feet. However I would rather get this stuck in my bare feet than through a shoe effectively pinning shoe to foot and resulting in having to cut off shoe to avoid further damage to my old feet. So I am getting out the big vacumn, the one that likes to cause the walls to cave in, and see what I find. Note to self: Hook up hose to intake side this time stupid.

Learned a good trick for "old fogies" to find small parts...............tape part of an old pair of nylon hose over the hose to form a filter.......when small parts are sucked up, they stay handy to recover. I LOVE it when the "carpet monster" looses!! (LOL)

Ummm- Are you by chance missing a twin sister? Separated at birth? I believe I might be married to her.... And yes, she is blond.

What a hoot! But it proves a few things, all of them connected with learning early and keeping at it.

    - Critters and model trains are not a good combo.

    - If your glasses have been on your nose for long enough - mine since age 5 and I'm your age :) - you don't have to look for them. On they go first thing in the morning, off they come last thing at night.

    - You could switch to Large Scale P) - 12 years ago it was "been there, done that" time, no basement, no attic, but a nice size garden. Of course there are people who moan after they carried and placed 20 tonnes of rock and dirt. But you can skip the weight training during the summer :D

I could add a few more points, but I have things to do. ;)

No not that my mother ever told me when she was alive. I have a younger brother and sister both of whom are accounted for and there are no blonds in my family. First time I ever fired that bigboy up I had the hose reversed. Whaddaya mean yer supposed ta read the instructions? Anyway when I pried myself off the wall and struggled to the off switch I vowed not to make that oops again. Fortunately it was not pointed at the workbench. This thing is a blower/vac and can do double duty as a leaf blower besides a wet dry vac. This thing will gobble up a bigboy without a hickcup.

    1) Drop small but critical part on floor.
    2) Search on hands and knees - in vain.
    3) Fire up vacuum cleaner to locate part.
    4) Dog goes nuts at sound of vacuum, chases cat.
    5) Cat jumps up on workbench/layout to escape dog, knocking additional parts loose
    6) Repeat

All I've got to say is... ummm, darn, can't remember. :tb-biggrin:

Actually, this weekend when I started working on the crossing gates, I opened the Tortoise, and there was a small sealed package with an actuator wire and a couple of green plastic parts. I STILL can't find where I put it!

Okay-so I went back to work on that nice factory that I was building last week, and - oh poo - what were the paint shades that I used to paint this with anyhow - since now I gotta finish the pieces I forgot to do last week- guess it was 'aged concrete' whoops- not! Now i gotta dang mess, must have been just plain 'concrete' and so it goes. . . I think a new idea is to write down the paint colors on the instruction sheet as I do them - yeah thats a great idea - now where did I put that sheet at?

On a sideline here I did work on the OOP Heljan Engine House kit - and since their window glass is like a scale foot away from the panes, I used the ole Testors Clear Window Maker liquid - I just did 446 panes of glass - man are my fingers tired from squeezin the bottle, but it do look nice!

I still haven't found the Tyco HO Santa Fe Blue and Yellow F7 I bought in Chicago in 2009 because it is the same as the one my older brother got in 1961 in a train set.

    I've looked on-and-off for a month.

You know this thread kinda makes me feel old.....with good reason....bad eye sight, 12 to 24 inches with out specs on....farther than 24 with them.....aches in body parts.....bad memory, strange that I can remember things from 50 years ago while forgetting the last 2 minutes....making mistakes about familiar things.....loss of motor controls, dropping things by not grasping tightly enough....

I don't wanna talk about any more!!!! LOL

    Jim
