I got an RSD15 off the bay' and I want to see whats under the hood, I can see two tab-holes on each side, but cant seem to get anywhere with getting the shell off. Anybody tackle one of these yet? This one does not have any screws underneath on the fuel tank. Thanks - Tim
Yeah, basically pry the shell wide on both sides of the fuel tank and pull the mechanism out. There's nothing wierd going on in there you have to be aware of. You may have to use a pair of jewelers screwdrivers inserted to hold the shell wide apart against the frame while you're pulling it loose, that's about it.
Randy's right, nothing other than those 4 tabs, unless,of course, someone glued it in.I usually use an X-Acto blade inserted between the shell/chassis,and just kinda walk the chassis out. They come out really easy..
Geez - it took 3 knives at once. Thanks - Tim BTW - anyone ever DCC one of these? Seems like nothing but pickup wires, one from each truck.
Never did a DCC installation, but it should be easy.Wires from one side of the trucks go to the top of the motor, the wires from the other side go to the bottom..You should be able to just splice it in..
Being that it is a Mehano... this method was frequently used to do more than juuuuussstttt get the shell off.
Are you thinking about doing the chassis swap mentioned several years ago by SSWJim? The one that uses a modified Atlas Dash8-40B chassis... with the Atlas Alco C628 trucks? http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?55428-RSD15 Randy G... did you ever follow-up and do that SSWJim conversion of an RSD15????
Hadnt thought of that - actually I am lucky enough if I can get some easy things done :tb-biggrin:. I just had given in to an urge to get an RSD15, (cheaply, which it was), even if its a non-prototype BN (they never had any) and also out of my era (BN). I just always thought they looked cool!
Hi, all, I posted this to the other thread above, and am just reposting it here, since some folks have asked. I'm in the process right now of using Jim's Atlas B40-8 mechanism with Atlas C628 trucks method, to build up three Alco RSD-15/RSD-7's using the MRC RSD-15 shell. I decided I better document what I did (mainly so that later on I would remember myself what to do!), and share that with everyone as well. I've got the 1st mechanism done and running smoothly, fitted under the Model Power RSD-15 shell. Here's four photos of the mechanism, and here's the link to the Pbase.com web page where the complete set (of what I've done so far) is located: http://www.pbase.com/atsf_arizona/n_scale_rsd15&page=all http://www.pbase.com/atsf_arizona/image/148672756 http://www.pbase.com/atsf_arizona/image/148672757 http://www.pbase.com/atsf_arizona/image/148672760 http://www.pbase.com/atsf_arizona/image/148672777 I hope this helps, comments and suggestions welcome.
