HI..I/ve been out of MR for about 12 years..and now back into it.. planning to go DCC. I have this Athern I think it is.. 12 wheel flywheel drive.. I need to get hand rails back on.. But I cannont Identify it.. is similar to a GP60.. but is not.. any hints appreciated..thanks.. Merlin
Not sure of the manufacturer. Could indeed be Athearn. BN #6615 in real life was an F45 unit. Quite different from a GP60.
Thanks for info..I was trying to edit my post and mention the f45... mine also has a step up from windshield...and I jackd found any identical. There are two mouth ting holes on there for something.not sure what.this is on offset below horn mount.
That's a Athearn FP45 or F45. I suggest contracting Athearn and see if part number ATH36111 (Wire Handrail Set, F45/FP45) is in stock. http://www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATH36111
Larry, Thats an Athearn F45, the FP45 would have an additional couple of inches between the end of the body and the last radiator fan, plus the chassis would be that much longer. Dan
found rails on ebay..but still do not remember what was installed in mounting holes above windshield on that ledge.... the horn goes in the very top...
Here is a few photos of one of my Athearn Genesis F45 locos - Burlington Northern. I think maybe the holes above the windshield on yours are for windshield wipers? I have an Athearn BlueBox F45 for the Great Northern as well but it is sitting up in the attic right now and not available for pics at the moment. If these Genesis photos don't help let me know, and I will go fetch the BlueBox F45 tomorrow.
The holes above the windshield are for the numberboard area. For some reason on the F45 Athearn had the numberboard mounting area as a separate piece
I think too..it is missing a big junk of plastic... I have no idea where to get it..if you look closely it has a large offset.. guess i could try to find an entire shell with all the detail as in engine posted above.. mine never did have all that detail.. i have no idea what would fit..as mine is near 35 years old.. i dont know if it was even new then..
A local hobby shop had a few of these blue box F45 locos in the used area...I think they were going for about $20 or $25. If you like, I can check to see if it is still there and in one piece (BN last time I looked).
I do take PayPal but have not had a chance to get to the hobby shop today (sad I live about a mile or two from it). I will try tomorrow or Friday and if they have it, I will pick it up for you. Can not verify how well these old beasts run but I am assuming that you are more interested in the shell than the drive train.
As I said before, the piece that is missing, leaving the 2 large holes, is the numberboard piece. Not sure if Athearn would have these in stock, or if you'll have to hope for a parts shell or what. Might be able to create one from some styrene pieces.
Well I went to the hobby shop today and they no longer have the F45 Blue Box locos. Granted it has been a couple of months since I looked at them but they sat on their shelves for almost two years!! Figures, when demand hits, they are gone . I would contact Athearn as suggested, they have been really great to work with in the past when I needed parts.
Thanks much Matt... yeah..found rails and horn on ebay.. but the prob is that offset above windshield which apparently is the numbersign... i'll look now and then..
The Athearn part number for the number board is 36101. The part number for the lens set is 36106. You can contact Athearn to see if they are still available. If they are not, you can make a part from styrene. I would recommend that you purchase an Cannon & Co. (or other manufacturers-Walthers/Google time) EMD cab and use the headlight and number board (or the whole cab), cut them to size, and add them to a styrene foundation. You will also want the lenses for these parts. Trying to make headlight fittings and number boards from scratch bites-I have tried it-and they look “homemade”. These units were re-bodied GP40's, and would have shared off the shelf parts like number boards and headlights. Have fun, take your time, and Squadron putty and good files are your friends. Also, if you are going to buy handrails, check Walthers for other manufacturers for them. The stock Athearns are OK, but there may still be some aftermarket makers that produce better looking stanchions and phosphor-bronze rails that are closer to scale size than the Athearn coathanger wire. Same with the horns. Mark
