Hi all. I'm just about to finish my benchwork this week, and have a question for ya'll. Have any of you ever used any kind of rubber/surface for your benchwork? I was thinking about getting a 1/8" rubber sheet to place atop my benchwork to hide/smooth out the knots and screws on the plywood. The other thought is for the areas I don't plan on using cork/roadbed, like in my staging area, it would deaden the sound and flatten out irregularities when laying track.

I'm not using any subroadbed initially, but will eventually have a couple of pieces of elevated plywood (about 6" above the main surface area) for a second level. Staging area will be located under the elevated plywood.

Has anyone ever done this? Good idea? Bad?

    Best regards...

Are you talking about a large flat area of plywood? Or cookie cutter? A lot of people just use a 1" or 2" layer of pink (or blue) foam. It will give you something to carve into make creeks and gullies.

I would think that would be more expensive and harder to punch a hole through.
Stick whit what most use: hard foamboard (pink or blue, not white)

For a large flat hidden staging area that actually doesn't sound like a half-bad experimental idea. What kind of cost/area are you looking at? If it's cheaper than cork roadbed, I would give it a shot.

You can pick up a 1/8" thick sheet of cork from most home improvement stores. You can then sand as needed between the cork sheet and the cork roadbed.

Have you considered some kind of squishy flooring underlayment? How about rubber shelf liner? I've used rubber shelf liner on a couple of N-scale layouts for roadbed. Somewhat wasteful for roadbed but great for a yard base. Just a thought...
