Winter In New England

This one is really good:



It shows a real, living scene - the man walking to the building, away from the Chevy (which looks like it's been in a fender-bender up near the front bumper, though that may be just lighting and shadow effects). trudging back to work for another day of the daily grind... the train doing its own work in the background... another cold day in the life of a New England town...

I'm echoing others on this board - this is art. If I saw a painting like this, I'd buy it.

 

Mike: I like the idea of a fender bender. It's only his shadow though.

Alan: the tree is made from a couple of clumps of roots from woody weeds [Polka Dot Plant] glued together and covered with clay, and with more roots glued in. All painted with acrylics. They seem to last a long time without getting too brittle. The foliage is Woodland Scenics mat which I painted brown, and I glued old tea leaves on as well.

Just a few pics to celebrate my new camera, an Olympus E-M5, bought on the weekend. Well.... I'm paying it off :cute:
F stops go all the way to 22, but after a lot of experimenting I reckon f/16 and f/18 are best for layout shots. I'm still fiddling with white balance.
I just love the touch screen, especially for taking the photos. It's quite addictive

There's some melting of the snow in front of the loco house - I brushed on some water.

I'm

Celebrating the arrival of my new soldering station - all of $37 delivered - which has allowed me to mend the lights after I had accidentally ripped out some of the wires below the baseboards.

It was just too hard to find replacement tips for my Dick Smith station. This one - an Atten AT937B - has a nice pointy tip. It's easy to find replacements too.

My Atlas C-424 is delivering a waffle-sided boxcar to the small industry. I don't know how one of the backscene lights looks blue. Perhaps it's just because it shone directly into the lens. There's no cellophane in there to colour the light, but I think I might be adding some.







There's a bit of light escaping out the roof.

Looks like the workers are ready for the boxcar's arrival.




There's a strange light escaping from the upper part of the wall too, but I like it, especially since it's near-impossible to patch it up from the inside. I intend to drill it out and glue some sort of plastic cover over the hole to make it look like a small outside light, or even an illuminated sign? I think the streetlight I've used inside the building is making things a bit too hot.

I took dozens of shots of this scene. Sometimes the shutter was open for a full minute [ I timed it] I'm very happy with the new camera. I set the aperture at f/18 and kept the ISO at its lowest setting of 200 and fiddled with the on-board brightness. The touch screen is brilliant for ensuring the centre of interest is in focus, because you just touch the screen at that spot and it prioritises the focus there as it takes the photo.
