Thought I would start this continuing thread in the HO forum.

I am about to replace a damaged rear railing on my brand new GP15-1

What is on your workbench?

I am starting the process of mating an Athearn FP-45 chassis with a Rivarossi E8 shell. I may remotor it with a NWSL motor, which is hanging around the workshop waiting for something to do.
I'm also finishing up converting an old Bachmann 89' auto carrier into two 44' auto carriers. The 89' carrier was truly waiting around for something to do for several years, being so unwieldy looking on 22" curves and generally looking like an orphan among a host of older 50' auto loaders.
And rounding out the workbench are several passenger car projects, mostly taking some IHC fantasy paint jobs and turning them into something closer to prototypical examples.

I'm in the middle of replacing the factory-supplied speakers with Railmaster speakers in my four Intermountain ES44s.

Bill,
Which speakers did you buy for that project? I want to do the same, but he has multiple round sizes.

For my stuff, finally installed the couplers on the F&GC boxcar, so it's now completed.

Also working these projects:

- Converting a Union Pacific SD40-2 to a GATX lease unit
- Conrail SD50 to an LLPX paint out
- FEC GP38-2 that is getting a full detail job, ditch lights, and working strobes

Finally working on my GP18,Brought a Bachmann Erie RR GP-7w/dcc last year, finally decided to rebuild into a Seaboard Coast Line GP18.New fans installed, changes to side sill & detailing done up to paint, which will be done today, will probably get #1058.Going to replace factory decoder with a tsunami sound decoder, nice in that engine has speaker enclosure already in her fuel tank. This will be my first attempt at installing a decoder, but looks as if it won't be too difficult.

Hi,
this is my first post on this forum. I'm form Babimost in Poland (near Wolsztyn, I think you know last active steam roundhouse in Europe). I build models of many polish locomotives because no producers make it. I make my models of metal (brass and new silver), of course with driving gear, lights, DCC and sound, scale H0. Under I present some photos. If you are interested in it I can write new thread and show more.

PS. My English isn't perfect, but I hope you uderstand what I write.

I found an Athearn BB kit- in particular, a 50-foot Great Northern sliding-door boxcar- that I plan to weather up a bit, then install some Reboxx metal wheelsets and Kadee number 58 couplers. I may also go ahead & restencil over the build date, and add some other decals found in the mid-to-late 1970s. Also, the roofwalk is going bye-bye, as are the oversized claws on the doors (I don't plan on messing with the doors anyway while the car is in use).

Something to do while watching NASCAR or perhaps a preseason NFL game.

Hi Bob
I was going down the West side of Soldier summit early one morning 10-15 years ago or so, just after daylight and saw a GN boxcar close to the rear end of the train. Was Blue and White weathered but not in too bad shape, kinda neat to see it still in service, could not get pics.
But would like to see pics of your efforts.
Thanks

That is some incredible detail! Not only are the locomotives works of art, but that drive gear/chassis you have pictured looks like it would pull a house. Would like to see more of your work!

Tom- Thanks, I'll have pics posted when done.

I opened the little bag o' stuff that came with the kit, and found friction-bearing trucks. Whoops! Along with that, a set of McHenry couplers. Double whoops!

No problem- I can come up with roller-bearing trucks, and I'm still installing REAL couplers (Kadees). The McHenrys are going into the scrap pile. (on a side note, it's nice to get a kit without horn-hook couplers- at least Athearn realized they were junk, and improved some with the McHenrys). I was also wrong on the car- it's Northern Pacific, but no sweat- it's still getting proper weathering for use on my layout.

The blue-box details may be a bit clunky to some, but I'm not ashamed to use 'em if I can. Besides, I find it hard to part with up to 50 bucks for rolling stock these days.....but that's a thread for another time....... ;)

Added some guard rails. Actually, Phil Rawlins did; I just helped.

Here's what's on my workbench, along with a number of projects that would be hard to do without this. Sure is a pain getting older.

I have started on a kitbash to build a P&LE Breadbox Coil Gon, per the drawings in a 60's era Model Railroader. The AHM model is wrong in a number of places and the basic gon body will be kit-bashed with a Walthers Coil Flat to come up with a more representative model. One of my club members has got his 95% complete and I am following in his footsteps to build my model.

These are the two models I am going to take apart, cut and kitbash to come up with a better representation of the P&LE Gon.

I don't know if you can see how the bracing under the AHM car does not conform to any prototype, the frame should be straight like the coil flat as the depressed section of the gon sides gives it the strength and not the frame.

This is the interior of the AHM gon and the coil flat. As you can see the AHM car is not realistic at all, and the ends of the gon are angled down toward the center and not flat like the model.

The first part of this project is to cut out the interior of the AHM Gon, just leaving the sides in order to insert the coil flat center portion and frame into the car. More pictures will follow with the next steps.

By the way, I take off my glasses to do the close up work, I can't seem to model with the bi-focals.

Building the workshops.

P1012494.jpg P1012498.jpg

I can't get straight rail to the righthand side, so I'm turning it into truck access with a ramp to a mezzanine area, cutting the gable end section for the short wall with the truck door. This meant the walls were no longer tall enough to reach the ground because they're meant to be added at the gable's lowest point, but I might be able to avoid having to build them up because the ramp may well disguise it.
