Update for anyone on the fence. The Amtrak order page shows quantity available. I received an announcement direct from Kato this morning and visited the order page about an hour later. There were 107 available. I ordered two and came back to the page to see 105, so it is real time. Right now, less than five hours later, the quantity available is 55. They'll likely be sold out later today, or tomorrow at the latest. You've been warned. This is a rare occasion where we have some idea how many were produced in the production run. Based upon the information listed above, there were likely less than 150 total, maybe as few as 110 or 120. I would like to know if anyone else ordered prior to noon Pacific time and happened to note the quantity available.
I got one at 8:20 eastern on 7/25 and it was #49, two minutes later it was 46 left. Yeah, that's a collectible. It's a long story, but I was present at the meetings on the original interior design team, and it was just a show-stopper. I've always loved those cars, best interior work Amtrak ever...'adopted'.
I've ridden in those on two round trips. One from LA to Oakland. The other all the way to Seattle and back. Great memories and a taste of what first class train travel used to be. I couldn't believe that these came out and had mine ordered within minutes. I hope to ride the Starlight at least one more time before it or the Parlour cars become a thing of the past. (count now at 46 remaining)
$14 to ship? I was going to order one just because but not at those rates. $48 total is just to much for me. Kevin
I get $39.71 when I queue up an order ($30 for the car and $9.71 for shipping). Should we now spend 20 pages grousing about this, or can we just accept the fact that it's not 1970? -Mark
No time to grouse if you're a Pacific Parlor fan. Only 27 units now left in stock. They'll likely sell out within the next hour or two. I was only going to order one, but when I saw the $10.xx shipping, I decided to just toss another one in the cart to make better use of the shipping charge.
what's the 70's, wait you mean there was stuff happening besides the BN merger.... my BN history books must be reread!!!:teeth:
Mine was only 10 to ship, must be because I live closer to the Amtrak station... But the added on tax...looks like a pass for me, that and I dunno if it ran in the mid 90s on trains other than the Coast starlight.
He is a good dude. He has done a lot for Amtrak fans in the model manufacturing industry/Amtrak partnership realm and had a huge hand in the Anniversary and display trains and heritage and veteran locos programs.
These have never ran on anything other than the Coast Starlight. That said, if anybody a) models N scale and b) has ridden first class on the Coast Starlight; it is highly likely that they will want to own one of these unique and very special cars. I only wish that Kato would tool the dormitory car so that we could assemble a complete, prototypical consist. (now only 13 left)
Down to the single digits. 8 remaining at 11pm Pacific. I wonder if they will post another batch of these?
