I'm working on some modern covered hopper kits and I want to add some details, but I don't know what sizes of wire or parts to use for things like stirrups, grab irons, ladder rungs, hand brake chains, brake piping, and so on.

    Advice?

    Thanks!

I've a couple of Detail Associates packages sitting here. #2503 which is .010, on the package is says represents 1/2 inch diameter; #2505 .015 which is stated as 1" diameter.

Model Railroader had an article which listed the corresponding wire sizes for the three major scales. I started with that and created a spreadsheet graph that also included drill sizes and dimensional lumber, and put it up on my workspace. It comes in handy. As for grabs, I find it hard to make the standard side ladder grabs consistent. It's best to buy those in bulk. Get a good pair of small wire cutters, and have fun. Filing the ends of your cuts helps it fit.

Another thing to remember is that grabs are round, stirrups are flat bar.
