Indeed. Any steam being resurrected is good in my book, and worth watching. Maybe the UP steam bit did me in, and turned me into the steam nut I used to laugh at people for... [IMG] :D

Hi all sorry about the unplaned hiatus, but life bit me <Grin>... refinaced the house, the hollidays, broke the computer ect ect ect.... but I'm back, So I'll try to catch ya'll up.

Much has been accomplished, the oil finally arrived for the roller bearings on the tender trucks, the journals have been refilled and saftey wired shut, also each axle set has been jacked up and the wheels spun, and gauged. It looks like all but two of the wheel sets are new, and even the smallest of the two could be turned at least twice before they go out of standards. All the 9 inch cyls have been refurbished 6 have passed testing and the remaining two are waiting on new unions, [the old ones wont seal] all bushings on truck 13 is done, [we ended up making 12 and one wrist pin] on truck 4, it looks like we will only need 3 bushings. the big hold up has been the discovery of damage to the brake pad mounting brackets, with many of them needing rework [weld build up and grinding to restore the profile that holds the break pad in place.] The bent foot plate bracket on the rear of the tender has been straightened and re attached, and the tender coupler has been removed, buffer springs inspected and is awaiting ultrasound inspection. Chris from the GCRR in Willams sent us an adjusting screw he made it fits exactly right. On the infastructure side we have a new storage trailer, this has freed up lots of room for work.
    More to come,
    Gunns

Kevin, click the 'edit' button to see the code for the picture below. I just opened the picture in your RI album, right-clicked, and copied the 'properties', then pasted them here into the window which opens when you click the IMAGE button when making a post.

Superb, meticulous work. It is amazing just how much is required to fully restore a locomotive.

I had a double shift last Sat. so I didnt stay for the work session, and when I got back Wends. I couldnt belive what had been done, (Pics Sat night) all but two Brake cyls remounted and Brake beams re done ect....
we also got the last (I hope) bushing done for the brake rigging. a total of 15 bushings and 2 wrist pins out of 192 bushings and approx 120 wrist pins. (we never made an exact count) The Barellas shops did great work when they put the 2926 in shape for display. I have heard that the DoD paid for the last "shoping" just in case the needed Loco power after "the Bomb" dropped, but I dont know if that's true.
    More to cme,
    Gunns

I have heard, and read, that near the end of steam, many locos of different companies were stored in "ready to roll" condition. Had been shopped, fresh flues, etc. But never again ran. So it is very possible that 2926 was one of those lucky ones.

Great progress today, the first brake beam is finshed, and work has started on the second beam that needs refinishing, this is out of 16 brake beams on the tender truck, but only three so far need work. It seems that the brake shoes hammer the shoe support on the brake beam and some of them have been distorted out of shape and wont hold the shoe in proper alingment. repair involves removal of the beam, weld buildup of the damaged areas, and grinding to the correct profile.
Clean out of all the nooks and pockets of the trucks continues, we especially want to make shure that all the drains are clear, this to insure that we dont have water traping it's self in the truck frames.
And a Mile Stone of sorts, we put air to front half of truck 13, and opperated the brakes. this was the first time since the Locomotive was put in the park in 1956, 50 years, the brakes worked correctly. And we showed our selves that we can dissamble and reassemble a system and have it work to "spec". Next comes the adjustments, and then the system air tests, then we seal it up and thier done <Grin>.
    More to come,

That black certainly does have a greenish hue. Interesting. What is the paint?

Congratulations on the successful assemblies and tests. Must feel really good, to see results of your labors.

Who came in to give this instruction? Was it someone from BNSF? Or another steam program?
