I have subscripted to MR and TRAINS for many years and I think that both are the Leading magazines in the field. IF you don't like the product then don't buy it. I enjoy reading it each month

I am a subscriber to MR since 1964 and still own every single issue. MR surely had its ups and downs, but at the moment I think it is in good shape.
I also subscribe to the 'NG & SL Gazette' and had RMC for years, keeping all these magazines too. (Looks like I got a gene or two from a pack rat! [IMG] )
Since I didn't want to rent half a warehouse just for keeping my MR issues, I always tear out all the advertisements (after reading the magazine)! This way the volume of the paper is reduced to about 30 % - and then you just can forget firms like e-Hobbies et cetera!
So far I almost always found something of interest in every issue - in one there is more, in the next one is less stuff which you can use. So what? You just can't have a mag which is tailored for your needs only!
As for the Trains of thought from Tony and other people's opinion pages: Sometimes they are interesting, sometimes they are outright boring. Well - I just fly over the text: If it catches my attention, I read it through; if not - there goes Tony together with the advertisements...
To sum it up: I'll stay with MR, because for me it's still the most versatile model railroading magazine.

I read MR every month, but Matt buys it [IMG] Sometimes there is little to interest me, but other issues have lots. I guess this is true of most mags.

I also have Trains on subscription. I think this is an excellent magazine, and helps me keep in touch with American rails. I am too far away to see for myself [IMG]

Well since I can look around my office and see blue binders, starting with 1978, with a years worth of MODEL RAILROADER Magazine. You might say that I am a satisfied customer of KALMBACH Publishing. I subscribe to MODEL RAILROADER, TRAINS, and the new one, CLASSIC TRAINS. I will admit that maybe everything in MR doesn't apply to me, but I still read MR cover to cover. About the Ehobbies ads, I don't really care. I have checked out their website and find that I can do a whole lot better at my local hobby shop. I feel that KALMBACH PUBLISHING and MODEL RAILROADER have done a lot to promote the hobby of Model Railroading and will continue to have my support for quite a while.

The way I see it, If you don't like the magazine stop reading it, if there's something or someone in a magazine, tear it out. Tony makes good @#$ wipe. [My opinion].

Tony Koester articles. I have nothing against him or his ideas (they are pretty good most of the time), I just would like to see some other content besides NKP. I'm sure after a few months of limited Tony stuff, I'd be up for another article. Just seems we get deluged by him every month!

So I'll end it here, yes, we have been featured more than any other club, but there are some pretty good reasons for that. Yes, I should've included fictional roads. But I still think we see too much Tony.

PS - eHobbies made a LOT of old-time retailers VERY upset.

FWIW, I don't subscribe to MR anymore, and buy an issue if it appeals to me (and I've been reading since MR since 1973. While Koester is an accomplished model railroader, I agree he's suffering (or we're suffering [IMG]
) from overexposure, and he needs to lay back a while.

Also, the eHobbies debacle is why the local hobby shops here have all dropped Kalmbach publications. Only Hastings and Barnes & Noble carry these mags now.

Wonder if Kalmbach is aware of the backlash
(or even cares, for that matter). They'd better watch out- arrogance will kill them.

I think that they're aware. In the latest MR. they're running an ad telling hobby dealers the benefits of carrying Kalmbach publications and magazines.

Any of you older readers (past 20-30 yrs) must then remember the days of Bruce Chubb or Malcom Furlow. Both were/are very talented modelers but were both overexposed in MR. We survived it then, we will survive the NKP now. They are still the best model magazine available in my opinion.

Its a shame to pay nearly $50.00 for mostly adds and articles that make us feel we have to buy from their sources or we are lowlifes. Sur the Hobby Shop is twice the price, because the MR charges too much for the Hobby Shop to run their adds. 30/40 years ago we could afford to run a personal add to sell, but have you tried today? They have taught our youth it is the right thing to do, to pay exorbitent prices for mediocer products. Now that E-Hobbies is on board, we will lose the comradship enjoyed at the local shops we grew up with. If you can't afford to buy Brass stuff, then turn around and kit bash it so it will run, you are a bum according to the MR attitude. You asked my opinion, I didn't just offer it. Live with it!!

[IMG] I sent to MR for advertising rates, with a view of advertising my products. The prices were way above my wildest nightmare for even very small ads, which would have been lost amongst all the others anyway [IMG]

Matt and I added up all the ads in a single issue, to see how much revenue MR received for the ads, and the figure was staggering! We thought that the cover price should be free!!
