Hi everyone! I need to replace the overhead lights in my train room. It has incandescent fixtures in it now. I have heard that flourescents are the best for layout lighting but an article in one of the magazines said halogens are better at duplicating sunlight in scale. The local hobby shop recommends track lighting but that seems to put the light directly on one spot. I need suggestions! Any other bulbs work good? I would like to use a dimmer to simulate sunset and night time also so anyone with experience please speak up.

You almost need everything you mentioned. I use flourescents for working on the layout, in an operating mode I use spots, (you know the outdoor 12V landscape lighting systems) for highlighting, with dimmers for night time. Don't forget to put in a couple of blue spots to simulate moonlight, it really works.

When in doubt, empty your magazine.

Chris is correct. If you add one kind of lighting ever so often, it spreads out the over all cost, and doesn't put such a dent in the old budget. The lighting can aid in photos, as well as during operations. A master switch is also an asset for when you have to leave in the middle of something.
