    Folks,

The "Points" system that a lot of you have noticed is a rewards system that builds point based on pre-defined criteria.

I am going to be doing some playing around with it over the next few days and some of you will see points rise and/or fall as I do some things with it.

Don't freak out over it. :)

I have been working on the points system and it is not done, and won't be done for a couple of days.

In general terms, what we are going to do is award one point for every 100 posts (plus one for the first post, and one for the tenth post, etc.), one point for every 100 likes received, and one point for each year of membership.

This is not a big deal. You can't redeem the points for a new car or a cruise. It's just something fun and will give people a general idea of a person's presence here.

We are going to use low numbers (such as 1 point) versus having people acquire thousands of points.

I hope people enjoy this small recognition from achieving things such as longevity, posting messages to the site, and receiving likes.

and the points do seem to be something you can turn off alerts for.

Yes, but other than now, you will so rarely receive points, that it will hardly be an annoyance.

I have 4 points, but what are they for? can we cash them in for something when we get so many?

    Just curious.

I need a washing machine that works. Grin!

Sounds good. I don't have a trophy one so it was kind of neat to think I might actually have...one.

    All in fun!

Well....like I said, I found I can de-select alerts for points. I do like the button to allow the sidebar to be toggled fully to the right, filling the screen with actual forum topics. I had previously used a program to eliminate content on the right, and to clean up the navigation headers, like ebay, amazon, can't recall what else. I am also able to change all the colours on the forum (previously and now), so what you have, while better, makes it a bit more readable at this end.
Still have a couple of things I am working on, but small.
Oh...yeah...any website that has FacePlant and Twit ter icons find them GONE.
    But that's just me.
I have IE6 on one computer, FF 12.0 on one...I like the lack of glitzy graphics..again, that's just me.

Keep trying and you'll eventually be able to get rid of everything on the site. Sounds like a self-solving problem.

Well, I could see where the Trophy's based on the number of posts could soon be redundant and have little or no meaning.

A trophy for some sort of modeling accomplishment or website created or how many times we had ..... in a train car. Ok, maybe that last one as well as the others doesn't work. Do I have perfect attendance, is there a make-up for missed meetings, what kind of music am I listening too....who cares. A trophy should be for some sort of accomplishment. Not sure at the moment what that would be here on TB?

Do give me a chance I'm working on it. Just need to stock up the old boiler and see what comes out.

What I hate is a return to grade school and the silly stars we got for good behavior, telling the teacher who did it and/or how good our grades are. Juvenile stuff. How many stars can I get by my name? I've out lived the need for merit badges, or masters degree or master modeler as in whatever seems to be of some importance to others.

So you can't judge things by how I see them. This has to fit the group as a whole. That won't be easy.

I've seen some layout work that definitely deserves recognition and a shout out here on TB.

I've seen some serious modeling of buildings, track work, signaling, train control and other subjects that we could acknowledge.

Photography that aptly illustrates a layout.

Even a good job of photo-shop.

Ok, you got me thinking. How about we nominate a topic or discussion we Like. A presentation that catches our attention. Let's say a 100 nominations or votes wins a trophy of recognition.

Anyway just my two cents. As I rattle on.

Looks like Frisco Charlie has his work cut out from him.

so this is where my post about the points went...

i understand the post counts, and the likes, but the points seem redundant. at least if there was something to strive for, besides a number, they would make sense.

I am with @BarstowRick in that they should be a reward for some milestones. and as a reward, they should amount to something. maybe i could for instance, cash in X number of points for a discounted purchase at a sponsored vender, and then the X number of points are removed, until they are built back up.

another idea, building on the milestone rewards idea, is a "trophy room" attached to the profile. so people can showcase their milestones in the hobby. or it could be like boy-scout merit badges.

    Anyway, just some thoughts.

Points? When did this happen. Anyway I like points. I would like to turn mine in for a few more years to enjoy model railroading. Okay? Jim

Okay. Had a long think on this.

I hate them. I hate likes and dislikes, points, any of that.
    Too "FaceBook"-ish.

But...I have seen so many abuses on other forums of this....ganging up with mostly dislikes, it becomes very personal, very fast.
I have eliminated alerts for points, if I need to, on my end only, I will generate a css and kill them.

I need a forum to be useful, not some, as stated, grade school bull poop that rapidly deteriorates.

    Think twice on this.

    Opinion only.

You have contributed not one penny to this forum (as far as I know), but your useless opinions abound.
