Could be the tips. It was a cheap iron, came with cheap tips and I ordered some extra..cheap tips. Really glad to hear you like the Hakko. Real world feedback is always best. I just hope it doesn't double in price before I can afford it. Pretty much everything I buy these days is a panic buy. We're in a recession as far as I'm concerned. Others may disagree. Thx for the info on Hakko.

I read your page, lots of great tips. My guess for the rock that holds your sponge in place.. lava rock? I prefer the brass tip cleaner, but that's just me. I like your method of higher heat, less time. That's how I learned way back from a great instructor. Another thing he taught us is not to cut off excess on component legs after soldering to a board. He said the shock of using snippers can weaken the joint and to cut the legs before soldering.

You work with soldering track alot and track is nickel. If nickel track can be soldered, wouldn't nickel guitar string solder, also? I have ideas on using guitar strings for experimental builds.. fire escapes and such. It's rigid and you can get unwound strings in sizes from .008 up to .024mm if I'm not mistaken.

I know this convo needs to move to a more suited thread... sorry.

Nope, and not really a rock that was formed in more common ways like sedimentary or igneous rocks.

Good idea, moved it to ( HERE ).

Moving to the new thread, but one last wild guess on the rock. Petrified wood?

The Kato truck came in, apparently. Picked up the Big Boy, UP 4015 and the One locomotive, UP 1979 at the local hobby shop.
Looks like I'll be eating bread sandwiches for a loooong time.

Some second hand UP passenger cars that looked too nice to resist. The trucks are pretty worn and they run like a sled even without the pickup wipers. Thinking about swapping the trucks for Microtrains replacements but the new trucks cost more than the cars!
