Despite the ongoing debate on the white LEDS I like them and would like to add them to my Atlas engines as well as some of my older Kato engines. My problem is that I am electronically challenged. I'm sure there is more to it than replacing a light bulb with a LED but probably not as complicated as I might think. Any help would be appreciated. Engines I have and are contemplating are Kato E9 (1st run) Atlas SD60, Trainmaster, SD35 and GP35.
There is absolutley nothing more to this than replacing the LED. I have actually stolen the LEDs from my Kato units to put in other units. The circuit boards in Kato units are exactly the same except for thewhite LED. I run white LEDs only in the front light spot at this time. That way only one LED is needed for a locomotive and the rear is swapped for a regular Yellow LED. I have put these LEDs in my Atlas locos with no problem. The one thing you do have to pay attention to is the polarity of the LED. If you look through the clear lens you will see a notch in the internal circuit. Make sure the new LED goes in oriented in the same manner as the LED you are removing.
I forgot to add I also want to convert two LifeLike FA2's. These do not have the printed circuit board. Do I need any special gadgetry?
There is a very simple circuit outlined at Sean Flanagan's web site (no affiliation - I found it with Google.) Use of the LM334Z as an LED driver in Model Locomotives
I do the same as Drew. Every new Kato locomotive provides a spare white LED from the rear end, to change for a yellow one on another unit. White LED's are easy to obtain, if a bit pricey, so I bought some more so all my locomotives will get them.

Does anyone have a supplier in the states or canada that sells 3mm white leds and ships them internationally? White led's are about $7.50 each here is australia. I'm going to need some more for I find them more realistic and impressive than the standard leds installed in the older loco's
