Yesterday morning I headed out and caught this guy northbound on the Sidney branch. That line was built jointly by the NP and GN, for a reason that I don't remember, and in a rare moment of cooperation.

An H train with a 30 mph restriction. Radio chatter at the beginning, and the 60 is going in and out of high idle.

Was this a "local" train? Out and back?

Yup. The locals out and back from Glendive are the Miles City turn, Sidney turn, Beach,ND turn and Dickinson, ND turn. There is also a fair amount of Glendive work, for the elevators, one 'super' and one old, the gravel pit, and a trio of oilfield support industries. So these units get a lot of use and miles.

There used to be a 'turn' for Hettinger, SD also, but I think that one has been reassigned to Aberdeen, SD.

Had 2 'happy accidents' today! The first was at Dickinson where I caught a couple of older EMD's switching,

And then on the way home this coal train came roaring through Sentinel Butte, ND. It had started blowing and it was mighty nippy!

Wow, 4 locos attached! Are these all images from the US? Forgive my ignorance, but for passenger rail providers, is Amtrak the only rail provider in US [ and is all of them privatized ]? I know that US had a hugely dense network of rails in the 20th century but it was dismantled slowly over the decades and passenger rail declined in favor of highways and cars.
