I picked up an old but working CTC-80 Command Control system. With it I got about 30 receivers, and I know I can purchase Railcommand receivers that will work. I was just wondering if anybody out there is using CTC 80 now?

I have never heard of it. But lets see if we can construct a working answer.
Re your ctc-80, what was the year of manufacture? What is it's operating logic?
can it operate more than one train at a time on the same track?
Is it similar to the GE AstroTrack?
Is it AC with carrier control?

    Keep talking!

I just noticed your city of orig. You might try to go to Stan Ames web site, he's one of the guys that set the standards for DCC and he's in Mass. Try him his wife's site Debby's tried and true trains, www.tttrains.com/.
Good Luck and tell your friends about our 'board.

This is the version of CTC 16(?)32(?) that used a pc for control or something like that...

It's just an early version of command control if i remember right. Do a Google.com search on it and see what you get.

  5. The original CTC ran in MR about 1980 and indeed was a Do It Yourself project. Sometime after that you were able to purchase kits and then the entire thing. It was popular during the 80s and is now out of production.

It did permit computer control of aspects of your railroad, but it was not and is not DCC.

Just spotted the post on CTC80. It was developed by a modeler in Kansas City named Larry Keeler, based on the old CTC16 but with greatly expanded capabilities. It is still in use on several layouts, including Chuck Hitchcock's Argentine Div. of the Santa Fe which has been published several times, Doug Taylor's East Broad Top and Pennsylvania Railroad which has also been published, and several others in the Kansas City area, and in some other pockets around the US. These guys still swear by it, I operate with it on their railroads during op sessions, and the one poster is correct, railcommand receivers and throttles are used with it. I have been the oddball in these group, having used Dynatrol instead, and then going to DCC.
