Has anyone installed a decoder in the Bachmann GE 44 tonner? I have the DCC ready model and would appreciate any tips as to brand, installation, etc.

Hi Graham and welcome to Trainboard. Does this loco have the decoder dummy plug? If so all you need to do is remove the plug and plug in a decoder. I know MRC makes plug in decoders, and I think Digitrax makes one that wil fit... HTH .....Mike

    Mike.....
No, this one doesn't have a plug, and the schematic on the instruction sheet is very vague. Guess I'll have to do more research. Thanks.

    Hi Graham.

Without an NMRA plug You can install a universal decoder such as this one:
    Zimo MX61/2000

Make sure the motor is isolated from the frame and/or power pick-up's. A wiring diagram is included with the decoder. Mount the red and black wire to the pick-up's. The orange and grey wire to the motor. Don't worry about polarity. If the loco moves in the wrong direction or the wrong headlight comes on, that can be changed by means of CV settings later. The blue wire is common to the headlights. The white is for the front and the yellow is for the rear headlight.

    Have fun,
