Is it possible to get decoders for the following types of engines?

    LL sw9/1200
    LL GP-20
    Kato sd40-2

How much work is involved? I'd be inclinded to pay someone to do it to make sure its right. I know me, if a certain engine gave me a hard time, even if it worked fine after, I wouldn't like that engine as much.

Digitrax makes a Plug 'N Play decoder for the Kato SD40-2 loco that basically requires replacement of the light board assembly with a similar DCC equipped board (model DN149K2). Check out the Digitrax site for more details: http://www.digitrax.com/

The LL units require more work. Check out our club's website for some helpful DCC hints, as well as links to many other DCC resources: http://www.trainweb.org/nrmrc/dcc/conversions.html

On the LL switcher, you will either have to mill the frame or get a new one. I am in Canada, but there is a place that basically for $10 will do a swap with your old frame, for a new frame which is suppose to be heavier (a good thing) yet have more room for a decoder. I think the company is Aztec, but I am not sure. It is in the US and advertises in MR alot. Help me out folks, whats the name of the company.

They also have other frames available for other engines as well. You probably can send your engines in as well and they will install the decoder for you, I am willing to bet.

    Good luck!

Aztec offers milled frames for (usually) $10 + a swap of the original frame. Check out their website at: http://www.aztectrains.com/ and click on "Additional Products". They offer a milled frame for the LL GP20; I don't see anything regarding the SW1200 conversion. I think N Scale Magazine had an artcile not too long ago about this conversion; I'll look it up tonight when I get home.

There are some companies that do DCC conversions too. Another resource is the NMRA site: http://www.ribbonrail.com/nmra/Manb-Elec.html
As always, I'd get some personal recommendations before sending my locos (and money) to a stranger!

    MY UP,

Welcome to the 'board. Try ttx-dcc.com or Loystoys.com, both do installations of diesel and steam. I use ttx just because they were the first and the job was very good.

I thought we were talking about N scale, given the models listed, but I could be wrong!

Correct, all those models exist in HO (LL GP20??). If you had followed the Free-lancer forum, you would see that my UP is an N scaler, hence we knew already.

I agree with the suggestion on going to Tony's (http://www.ttx-dcc.com). My club (of which I am the DCC guru) uses him exclusively for our supplier. However, I do our installations, as he can get pricey at times. Do some checking around and see what you feel is best.

By the way, I'd recommend the LE010XF for the LL SW9 and GP20s. It is brand new, very small, and around $20 each.
