Below is a photo I took in 1985 of a pair of Detroit & Mackinac locomotives backing onto a string of hoppers, in Bay City, Mi. It was dull and raining so the pic came out a bit dark. They are listed in an old book I have, as TE56-4A, rebuilt by MK in 1974 and 1975. Hence the numbers 974 & 974, I guess. They obviously used to be Alco RS2 or RS3, and I am sure I read somewhere that they had benn fitted with GM 567 prime movers. Does anyone have any knowledge of these locomotives? ------------------ Alan Curtis. Moderator. Alan, to the best of my knowledge, both units survive on the roster of Lake State Railways, the successor to the D&M. I have a friend that lives along the line and I'll get an update on the units from him. ------------------ Brian Schmidt railohio@hotmail.com ICQ #21630753 AIM - railohio
This is severely out of my league Anyway, one of the Diesel Roster Books I have list the locos as RS2's "rebuilt". I can't tell if they have EMD prime movers or not, but it appears that the trailing loco is showing a big fat ALco stack, so without any better detailed pictures, I'd have to guess not. (Most EMD re-engines sprouted double exhaust stacks). I'll look for some better photos. Harold ------------------ Harold Hodnett Fan of NS, CSX, and their predecessors! I've chased the D&M for over 25 yrs now and to my knowledge all the ALCO units remained EMD free- them suckers sure can smoke!
