Just out here in Colorado to ride the Durago & Silverton and the Cumbres & Tolted narrow gauge steam train. Both trips have fantastic sceney. The D&S is somewhat commercialized though. One down side to the D&S is tht they are just letting the freight euipment rot away. On the trip I saw many freight cars with the roofs cave in and others with the sides collapsed sitting out in the weeds and weather. The Cumbres and Tolte has things in hand are are keeping up the freight cars. Saw one Gon with new wood and being prepped for painting. O the D&S we got "mooned" on the way back into Durango. Just on the north end of town three girls and four uys ran up trackside across theriver and mooned the rain. I thought that only happened in alifrnia. I recommend riding both trips but the C&T is a better trip.
Wow. Sad to read about the D&S equipment. Bummer Re: "The moon". As our once decent society continues to implode, stupidity has spread everywhere. There's simply no place to get away from morons these days. Got any photos of the good stuff?
A lot of stoners living in Durango going to the local liberal arts college. I'm not too surprised you got mooned lol.
We rode the C&T on Friday....it was INCREDIBLE. Truly a national treasure. No mooners on the C&T but we saw one from the California Zephyr earlier in the week east of Glenwood Springs.
Ha, Ha. I was born and raised in Oregon and have had my share of shirt lift ups by braless girls and been mooned by both sexs in Oregon. I've lived in California since '95 and the only moon I've seen is in the sky! I must live in the wrong neck of the woods. Jim
I'm no saint, but idiotic public exhibition I don't do. I once mooned a neighbor's wife. She and her husband were at our house. Just the four of us, having a barbeque, and she was getting absolutely b-tchy. So I gave her a view, and it worked very nicely. Stopped her cold, as she had to pick my wife and her husband off the ground. They were both splitting a gut laughing so hard.... She never acted that way again!
I need to get back up there and ride some again. I have never actually ridden the D&S as when I rode that line it was still called the D&RG.
I mooned the UP's Portland Rose one time ( mid '60's ) . The mainline in Mtn Home ID runs by the old highway and a 3-4 foot deep irrigation ditch that runs along side for while , becomes a swimming hole during the hot desert summers ( it's free ) so a few of us get on our bicycles and pedal out to the ditch to cool off after a long, hot day of mowing lawns and goofin off ....
Hadn't read or heard that nickname in a while. Anyhow, sounds like an interesting trip! If you ever upload it, please let us know.
The Amtrak "Coast Starlight" is late so much they should rename it the "Coast Starlate" Had a good trip even if the Amtrak trains were always late.
It ahs indeed been referenced as the "Starlate". That sad state of affairs goes back quite a few years. Have always heard is is a good trip, just the seemingly frequent lost time...
I rode the CS down to LA one time to go to Disneyland with my Mom, sisters and Grandmother. It was a nice trip. My only disappointment was it goes through the Syskious at night/early morning hours. Ryan
Rode the D&S on my 29th b-day. Was a wonderful trip. Haven't ridden the C&T yet, although I want to. I tried convincing the engineer to let me ride in the cab back to Durango but it was a "no go". Apparently you can purchase a one way cab ride now for $1,000. Too much $$$$ for me. Ryan
That had already started back when it was still Denver & Rio Grande. This is from 1976 at Elk Park on the way to Silverton. The cars had not moved in years and were in sad shape.
