Does anyone have the dimensions for the F unit 1500gallon tank that replaced the original 1200 gallon tank? I know I have seen those dimensions somewhere. Thanks.

Here's the way I see it.

I have a Stewart model and the 1200 gallon tank measures 103 inches wide scaled out to full size. Since the 1500 gallon tank can be no deeper or longer that this 1200 gallon tank, the only dimension that will change is width. Fifteen hundred gal. is 25 percent more than 1200 gal., so the 1500 gallon tank will be 25 percent wider than the 1200 gallon tank. That's all there is to it.

I did the math and that is one foot wider on each side or about 0.150 inches (3.81 mm) wider on each side. Seems like a lot. But, I have a Details West H0 scale 1500 gal. tank extension (for Athearn Genesis F7) and it measures exactly 0.15 inches wide. How about that!

At first I thought the Details West product was too wide and I was going to build my own from styrene, but now I will use it. In fact, I may have to make my N scale 1500 gal. tanks wider.

So, now I would ask if anyone remembers these tanks or do you, like I did, think adding one foot to each side of a tank is too much? The original tanks were tucked under the side skirts, so one foot added to a 1200 gal. tank adds less than one foot to the total width of the engine, although it does stick out. Thanks for the input.

I will have pictures of this 1500 gallon tank modification later.

    Hey Flash,

I went the lazy way about making my "1500" gal fuel tanks. I figured the tanks went to the edge of the car body. So I took an Atlas GP9 fuel tank, cut it down and attached it to the F unit battery box. I think it turned out pretty good.

    My 2 cents,

Wolf, I think you are right. I take back what I said before. After carefully looking at 1500 gallon tanks, I think they are a little longer than the 1200 gallon tanks. The 1500 gallon tanks don't seem to extend beyond sides of the car body, at least not very much.

That's a good idea on the GP9 tank. I am kitbashing mine on my H0 scale F7.

Here is a picture history of my H0 scale Stewart 1500 gallon fuel tank. It was done entirely with styrene except for some white metal details. I will kit bash those details, too, on the next two tanks I build.

Styrene strips, 0.060 inches thick, added to the basic Stewart fuel tank. Those are then covered with a 0.020 inch sheet to smooth out the sides.

I left some of the side skirt. I may remove it completely on the next tank. Espee had many variations of the F7 unit side skirts.

Painted and a little fuel weathering. Next, I will add a unit number and more weathering. I will get the diaphragms on later as I don't have them right now.

Wolf, I do think the tanks have no overhang outside the car body.

    More Photos

It was really pretty easy once I found that the styrene pieces would adhere to the basic Stewart fuel tank.
