Hi guys, I was at a show last weekend in Chantilly and had my go pro precariously balanced on a depressed center heavy-weight flat car, and was thinking about how I could mount it somewhat diagonally with a mirror to straighten out the viewing angle for recording... I was similarly thinking about using an old iPod nano (the first one that came with a video camera) to do the same... Anybody done things like this? I don't necessarily care about the 'view while running' aspect, so much as I care about the 'ability to record a full lap' aspect... however mounting an iPad while the go pro is on wifi would work quite well I'd assume... I'll be playing with this on a couple of old SCL flat cars that haven't seen any run time in quite some time to see how I can make some simple mounts and leave a little room for adjustment... who knows, this might become part of my "MOW" collection...
I believe I've seen an arrangement like you're thinking of - I think I even saw one for sale! This is, of course, assuming you're in HO. The only real option for N is a dedicated tiny camera, I think it was called the looxie?
The real trick is to make a curve-anticipating camera car. It's a more difficult project but yields more realistic video. Here's one in N-scale, but the same principles would apply in HO. http://lordzox.com/mrr/camcar.html - Jeff
