I think these are interesting locos that at first glance could be confused as GP38's. CSX inherited theirs from C&O, who bought one of the largest number, 10, I think. They are basically 2300 h.p. turbocharged GP38's. Compare this GP39: To this GP38: I have a few pictures of these units, but not many. I don't know if they are still on the CSX roster or not. Thanks harold. Good to see the two types sise by side (or one above the other) I never really studied the differences before.
EMD's GP39 is a rare machine with just 23 built in 1969-1970. The C&O GP39s were built between May and July 1969. They numbered 20 with road numbers from 3900-3919. The Atlanta and Saint Andrews Bay rostered #507 a GP39 built in July 1970. Kennecott Copper had two GP39DCs numbered 1 & 2 built in June 1970. That's it for GP39 production.
SSW, Thanks for the correction and additional information. With that small production, I guess I should feel honored to have pictures of any Harold
