I have started a large (16 x 20) layout in HO Would I be crazy to trash it and go N. I went with ho because I am not sure I can install decoders in N scale. I like N scale a lot because a 24" shelf is not much room in HO. I would like to hear any and all opinions........

<font color="336633">Yeah you would be crazy to leave HO [IMG], but you can fit decoders in N scale locos, HO is better in the fact you can ge a far greater variaty in that scale, but like you say you can get a lot more on your layout in N, but in the end its up to you.

I am an HO modeler but i do also have a few bits of N, i prefer HO though and will allways remain my 1st choice

    OK,
Here is the deal [IMG]. I have modeled in both HO and N for many years. Although I really like the detail that the Horribly Oversized scale gives, N allows more railroad for the same space. I know this is an old cliche, but think about what that means. More prototypical operation is possible, longer trains, more industries to switch. I was really reluctant to move from HO to N for my new layout, and now I wonder why I ever modeled imn HO to begin with [IMG]!! I say do it, you won't regret the choice. As far as installing decoders goes, I have been lead to believe that it is not difficult at all. I am a long way from starting the process, however, so I don't know for sure. Remember though, there are companies that will install decoders for you if you don't want to do it yourself, and of course many new engines are coming DCC ready. What ever you decide, good luck and Happy Modeling!

Hi Kraydune, I am a N scaler and have been for more than 20 years but I did start in HO as N scale wasn't anything like it is today. I recently checked out going to DCC and find that there are plug and go detectors for Atlas diesel locos (N scale) and also detectors available that will fit inside a steam locos tender. This does mean some soldering but it is possible. The only problem is the decoders for N gauge are much more expensive than for HO. I was told that Digitrack will be coming out with smaller, more affordable N gauge decoders so will wait till then. To get started I was quoted around $400.00 for everything needed to start including a 5 watt power supply and a decoder for 1 locomotive. This also has one walk around unit. In the meantime, I rely on good old fashioned block control.
If you are a steam buff then I would suggest you stay with HO scale because there is a great choice of locomotives. If you are into a more modern era with diesels then N gauge is the way to go as the size of N gauge allows a better looking railroad than HO does in the same space
