I am debating which scale I should use to build my railway empire.

At this time, I'm working with HO. I just acquired a 10'x20' space in the basement and I'm torned between the level of details that HO allow you to model, however, N would allow for more trackage. I would like to run long trains, i.e. passenger, intermodal, etc. however I'm afraid that HO would limit this activity...

What would be the advantages/disadvantages of HO vs. N (DCC, availability, choice, quality, cost, etc.)?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

well one of the great things of HO is the detail that is on locos and rolling stock these days, there is LOTS more types of locos about and fitting DCC to HO must be easyier...... [IMG]

i model HO and N but i will allways have HO as my main scale

I really love detail so my choice is HO, but the N scale models have come so far...

It really comes down to personal preference.

Get some N scale stuff and play around with it, see what you like.

I've modeled in both scales. One thing I wish I did--now that I've spent the money and laid the track--is to have built the exact same plan dimensionally but to have used N scale. My somewhat sharp HO 18" and 22" radius curves would be gargantuan in N, and my city scene would fit at one end of the layout instead of being the whole thing.

I don't do DCC, and don't plan on it with a small layout like mine that at most would handle two trains, so I can't comment on it.

    No matter what--have fun!

My BIG little brother models N scale, I like to model in H.O. I like the switching of Industries, and looking at the Nuts & Bolts of it. He,(Paul), likes running a train from one place to another on-time. I think it's about which is more satisfying to you. I can't say I don't enjoy running a train of 40-plus cars, but I'd rather switch the mill. Are we having fun yet? Bobby How do you folks insret that big, GREEN ,smiley dude?

Since I have had to break down the CSW for a move to our new home, I too am having an identity crises. I model HO, but have modeled N. The choices are not simple as it is not just between HO or N for me because Bachmann has come up with their new 0n30 which I really like [IMG]...decisions, decisions [IMG]!! Happy Modeling!!

when i was a child many moons ago I modelled HO but since taking up the hobby again and having limited space like most people i have switched to N scale and have no regrets. I have been able to build a layout with a large enough mainline to run decent length trains. there are plenty of manufacturers producing good products. The only downside of N scale is still the "limited run" view by certain locomotive manufacturers. I am about to extend my layout which when complet will give me hours of running satisfaction. In the end it is up too every individual to find the scale that suits best.
