I'm trying to get info on something I think I remember?? I thought there was a logging operation in the mountains by the South Fork of the American river in California that used a cable to move logging cars from one side of the river to the other high above the river. I also though that someone modeled this operation. Looking for info/photos on either. I've found a few references to a cable operation like this buy not much. Thanks, Sumner
i have heard of moving individual logs by cable over a river or crevasse, but not an entire logging car ... doesn't mean they didn't do it though ...
Thanks that is the one. I saw the link to the video earlier today but didn't click on it as I assumed that it was all audio. I'm about sure that I saw that someone had modeled it. If I saw that it was probably in the late 60's early 70's and possibly in one of the Model RR mags I still have from then. Sumner
Found this .... Very nice work and maybe the one I remember as it was done in the early 70's. http://www.freerails.com/view_topic.php?id=5583&forum_id=60&page=3 Sumner P.S. Reading the article above further I see the display was written about by Linn H. Westcott in 1973 so I'm thinking it is in one of the issues I still have from then.
That would be really neat to see a model of that running. The closest I've seen is at a train show, a small layout with a working model of a cable car (for passengers) going up to the summit of a mountain. There were several cars on the single cable that went in a loop, like the real one. I can only imagine the rush of crossing the valley in that contraption with a fully-loaded lumber flat. That video is fantastic.
'sidney' If your posting doesn't post right away look up to the upper right corner of the page. If there's three little black bars flashing the system is running slow. Wait for it to stop posting. If your posting is still there but no additional posting frame just go to the next posting. Then when you return your posting will be there with an empty frame below. I've had it happen several times in the past and these past two days it's happening a lot. Just be patient.
I get a similar thing when I hit "Like" and those bars will flash until they time out. I do a refresh of the page and my Likes are really there. The server may need a lepton sweep and an Adminstratium decontamination...
Notice it was CUT lumber, not the full tree. Looks like an incline, down to one side of the landing. Loggers did whatever they had to, with what they had to do it with. They got the job DONE.
