Me' eyes deceive me! The typical 2 lane, Aurora 4-way slot-car R.R. X-crossing, with road markings, is a VERY HOT item on fleebay fetching $40-$65+ (plus shipping) so, pictured in a 'lil corner along with a bunch of other "stuff" is . . . Spoiler: WHAT IS THIS? A 'homemade' item? Never seen such a thing before I need the "guardrails", the rest would be "fluff"!
N SCALE TRAIN KATO LOCOMOTIVE MIKADO < Not even Close Some Things Are Missing ! ! Not even worth the $ . Tom
This might be right up an Analog , KITBASHERS alley. one chassis Looks Like ATLAS /ROCO .. could be MINITRIX . Which one is LL? Not sure about the manufacturer at the top right, also I see a 1960's BACHMANN CHASSIS in the mix . Tom

Yup, that’s the same one I just posted. Lemme just go to the bank and get that 2 million. 100k in ECONOMY shipping even.
At one point I remember purchasing one of these for under $ 40.00 .. and not at the exuberant $ which this ebay seller is asking . Tom
Now that this thread has blown right past the 500 page mark, I was thinking about the original reason why it was started in the first place, back in January 2009 (!) And that is, at least in my mind, because there was a collective frustration from a small (but vocal!) subset of the major participants here with some-- but not all-- of the listings on that Internet Trading Community. This wasn't stated up front-- the thread started with the link to an auction-- but I think it's been implied ever since. The feeling was that there is a sufficiently non-trivial percentage of overpriced items, badly described items, and just plain junk, that were someone to buy it, they would perhaps be turned off the hobby forever, and tell their friends and neighbors about it as well. (There are all sorts of online citations when the phrase "bad experience word of mouth" is searched. The general consensus is that people talk more, and to more people, about bad deals than they do about good ones.) It's morphed and changed over the more than 15 years now, and has drifted considerably from time to time, but I think that's been the central premise of this thread. No, folks, this item does not normally sell for $250 plus shipping; uh, be careful about that freight car that looks like Fido buried it in the backyard; no, the MSRP for a single piece of Rare, Vintage, Hard to Find five inch straight track is not six dollars; yes, that locomotive is supposed to have a roof on the cab, and two trucks, and a full set of handrails. And then, there's the seemingly infinite pool of Southern Pacific train models that were let loose by Reader's Digest... but let's just leave that one alone this time. It also seems to me that things are getting worse, not better, out there (AI descriptions, anyone?), and has been pointed out here and there in these bytes, the "humor" isn't limited to the usual subject of this thread, but plenty of other places in cyberspace as well. Actually, Steering Clear of Bad Deals has been needed well before there ever was an Internet; take, for example, more than one sales table at more than one train show when I was growing up. That hasn't stopped either-- the last physical show I attended confirmed that reality. Maybe this thread is helping anyone, maybe it's just making us participants look cynical, I don't know. Attempting to take on the role of the Consumer Protection Agency, N Scale Department, is probably just an exercise in futility. But then I see twelve consecutive listings for empty train set boxes for $24.99 each and I just want to scream...
I can understand that genuine locomotive bells have a significant value, but this seems to stretch the idea for quite a distance...........
Surprisingly there Are 19 Bids on this ! This might be right up an Analog , KITBASHERS alley. one chassis Looks Like ATLAS /ROCO .. could be MINITRIX . Which one is LL? Not sure about the manufacturer at the top right, also I see a 1960's BACHMANN CHASSIS in the mix . Tom
If someone did an unboxing video on one of those empty train boxes would there be anything to see ?????????? ahhhhhhhh ... I'm just giving myself a headache
Found a page on the web that described this set. Made in 2006, a "limited edition". But no hints there as to price.
THREAD DRIFT WARNING: Went to the local yearly train show last weekend and there was a seller with about 100 MT cars...but none with a box. Now that MT is more and more offering cars without the plastic box, I asked him what he did with the boxes and told him that I was willing to buy all of the boxes he had (I probably would have bought most of his freight cars as well if they had boxes...he had very good prices). Of course, he had thrown away the boxes awhile ago and I ended up with only 6 new 'homeless' (boxless) freight cars...
Oh my gosh. I'm puzzled why anyone would so such a thing, with the boxes being efficiently sized and well designed.
