BCR. Athearn makes the SD40-2 not the SD40. ------------------ Theres no such thing as having to many coal hoppers or GP40-2 when you model Chessie System LONG LIVE THE KITTEN!!! LONG LIVE BIG BLUE!!!
I was in my local hobby shop today, and I spotted a RailPower Products SD38 shell with chassis. Looks like all it would need is the power trucks, motor and drive train from another Athearn 6-motor (SD40-2), plus the appropriate details to model an SD38-2 (or just an SD38), and there you go. The SD60 chassis/frame sets are also out there. Since the SD60 and SD50 are externally alike, you could model both. Those are the only options available until someone comes out with R-T-R models. ------------------ Ship IT on the Frisco! Bob T.
Welllll.....it's not quite that easy for the SD38-2, at least by using an RPP SD38. The Dash-2 units are longer thanks to the HT-C trucks, so the Athearn SD40-2 trucks won't fit on the RPP frame. Also, there are a few other differences between the SD38 and SD38-2, like the length, dynamic brake hatch, air filter box, cab and sub-base, doors, etc. The best way to go would be to rework an Athearn SD40-2 with a new radiator section (possibly graft-on the one from the Athearn GP38-2, or rework the existing one with a Plano fan hatch and Cannon grilles). It sounds more tedious then it really is. When you've got plenty of photos and drawings to guide you, it really isn't all that bad....and kinda fun! Check out http://espee.railfan.net/spsd38-2.html for some Espee SD38-2 pics. And speaking of SD50, anyone else see the latest issue of RailModel Journal? Very nice DRGW SD50 modeling article! A great example of what can be done with Cannon parts.... ------------------ Have A Nice Day!

As to the Talgo in HO/N Scale, Marklin already makes the European versions, and I have heard that they are planning on releasing the US version sometime in 2001. Marklin officials were at the Talgo America Inc. headquarters about 2 weeks ago, getting measurements, photos, etc. Probably doing research. The only thing that differentiates the European Talgo from the American version is the fins on the baggage/power cars, and the makeup of the sets. Marklin, just add the fins!!!! With Athearn's F59PHI literally just around the corner, I think the Talgo cannot be too far behind. Altho if Athearn releases the Talgo before Marklin does, I'll eat crow!

Oops, SD40-2, SD40, same thing if you have a drill. There is an N scale Talgo coming out from a Canadian Co. before October (they said August). Happy Railroading! Well, as you may or may not have heard, Atlas has announced the upcoming release of a GP38. Scale-width hood, much better details than the Atlas/Roco engine (which I have 4 of, and which still run fine), and in several paint schemes as well as undec. Scratch one off the "wish list"- it's here! Wonder how they'll run with Athearn's GP38-2s???????????? ------------------ Ship IT on the Frisco! Bob T.
Man, talk about alot of GPs in HO latelly! Just wondering, is there really that much demand for all the different styles? If I am correct Athearn too just redid there GP40 (?) or 38 (?) so why would Atlas come in with competition. Happy Railroading! If I am correct Athearn too just redid there GP40 (?) or 38 (?) so why would Atlas come in with competition. Happy Railroading! Dane N.

Simple: Athearn's are Dash-2, Atlas is not. Athearn didn't redo the GP38-2 or GP40-2, but the SD40-2, which is quite different than an SD40. The prototype Dash-2 model line was introduced by EMD in 1972 as an improvement over their previous GP/SD 38,40, and SD45 models, most of the changes being internal in an effort to increase reliability and maintainability. The external differences between GP/SD 38, 40, SD45 and their Dash-2 counterparts are subtle, but to modelers, are important. The SD40-2, for example, is slightly longer than the SD40. The SD40-2 also has a few other differences than the SD40 in regards to the truck type; most SD40-2's, with the exception of Conrails, ride on HT-C trucks, which are longer than the Flexicoil-C trucks SD40's came equipped with. Also, SD40-2's had a slightly different cab, battery box and sub-base doors, electrical compartment access door, and depending on what year it was produced, nose length, anticlimber, radiator fans, radiator grill style and exhaust stack could vary. Differences between the GP38/40 and their Dash-2 versions are similiar to the ones I mentioned above, although the Geeps used the same frame and are the same length. Trucks could vary on GP units though; most early Geeps rode on the familiar Blomberg B trucks, but with the Dash-2 units, EMD offered a modified Blomberg with a different brake and suspension arrangement. Also, the arrangement of the access doors for the radiator compartment are different on the GP38/40 units than on their Dash-2 cousins. There are a few variations here and there, but those are the most major differences that come to mind. Lots of little details that make modeling EMD units so much fun....excuse the length ------------------ Have A Nice Day!
I know the difference between the 2 models, but looked a a NEW ATHEARN GP, and an older GP38, and there was a clear difference in quality. Happy Railroading!! If I was a model company I'd make a GP39-2. I can think of six different paint schemes I've seen on these just in Oregon, and I know there were a lot of them used throughout the rest of the country. The layout I'm planning to build in the future is going to need a whole mess of them.

Happy Railroading!! Dane N.

I have two variations of Athearn's GP38-2- one with the early version radiator intakes, and one with the corrugated air intakes. The early offerings came out with the shorter fuel tanks on the chassis, while I see the later ones now with the "correct-size" fuel tanks (well they are to me, anyway, since I model the Frisco). The only other variation Athearn could come out with would be a tapered paper air filter, or one with a later version traction motor blower vent. We can model these now with Cannon detail parts......... ------------------ Ship IT on the Frisco! Bob T.

Athearn did fix up the GP40-2 and GP38-2 shells quite a few years back (I mean many) but athearn offers many variations on radiators and fuel tank size even trucks. ------------------ Theres no such thing as having to many coal hoppers or GP40-2 when you model Chessie System LONG LIVE THE KITTEN!!!
