Would anybody happen to have any info pertaining to SP&S MoW equipment and what markings it may have worn. I ordered a pair of MTL heavyweights I was planning on using on an MoW train and after watching the "8mm vintage film of the SP&S video part 1" on youtube, posted by Wesolint. There was an RS3 powered MoW train consisting of a 250 Ton Crane, Boom car, steam engine tender, a couple flat cars, and a trio of heavyweights in a brow or red scheme.

There are some photos in a couple of the books. I took a slide or two, wherever those are hidden these days.

There is a crane and boom car at the Northwest Railway Museum up in Snoqualmie. Plus, I know a couple of those guys are SP&S fans....

I will get the SP&S guide to freight and Pass. equipment soon, so I can start a fleet... or something. I should probably get a decal printer while I'm at it... wonder how much those go for.

So far for my SP&S/Fictional BN MoW train I do have the BN SP&S heritage boxcar, and a BN Scale car. If MTL would kindly release more heavyweights of every car type(Baggage, RPO, Coach, more sleepers, diner, more observation cars) it'd be a real help.

at about 5 minutes is when the RS3 and MOW train shows up.

Tichy a good crane and flat car that is very close to SP&S x-5. The MOW were mostly painted red, had only small SP&S then MOW followed with the X- number. The old passenger heavyweight cars, were an old diner, coach, couple X baggage cars that were with the wreck crew. X 11 was a 250 ton Industrial brownhoist, painted black and had just its number if I remember right. SP&S historical society had two editions just on MOW equipment. I know that they still had copies availible, very good photos and info.

The video footage is a real trip back. Makes me think of my grade school days along an NP branch line.

If you get the color guide, it has a fair bunch of photos of MOW equipment. As OregonTrunk states, the Tichy crane and tender are a good representation of X5, although the Tichy kit is a 120 ton crane and X5 was a 75 ton. The x5 is the crane at Snoqualmie. The Tichy outfit cars are also a good match for SP&S equipment. There were actually quite a few old heavyweights in the MOW fleet. I did a MOW SP&S train with a crane, crane tender, steam tender, several outfit cars, a couple of old wood boxcars, an old 40ft flatcar, a dozer tender, and one heavyweight car. It isn't totally prototypical, but it captures the essence, and I like it.

Wish I could find my slides of the X-5 at Snoqualmie. I took them before we did some cleanup work on it, must have been about 25 years ago now.

    #750,

That video is very cool. Notice the RS unit is painted in as delivered scheme with the solid yellow sill. MOW is a great part of the hobby. Most of mine were modeled from the color guide also. It is a great reference. Most of the lettering was pretty simple. There was a MOW decal set put out by a smaller company, but out of stock now. I am afraid you will be better off printing your own decals.

Here are a couple custom builds. I prefer the one of a kind.

Someday soon I want to attempt the twin cupola flanger. I have a old MR issue in which someone modeled an O scale version.

Thanks for the responses, I plan on getting the guide and I will seek info from the SP&SHS.

Thank goodness I post here, where there are SP&S fans by the ton!

My two heavyweights will be coming with a sanding tower ad drying house kit, I have two cars already set for MoW service(three if you count SP&S caboose #722 which will serve on the MoW train) the BN/SP&S 40 boxcar MTL did is one car, the other is a BN scale car since I'm modeling a fictional BN where the roads only merged on paper.

I have two questions, Would the Bachmann 250 ton crane serve as a good stand in(It looks similar to the crane in the video) and which flat type would serve as a good MoW car a fishbelly or straight sill?

The Bachmann crane would be a good 250 ton crane to use........but it's a steam crane. I can't remember what era you are doing, but the crane was built in 1947 and converted to Diesel in 1967. The tender used after the conversion was a converted boxcar, so it was straight sided. Most of the crane tenders had compartments underneath between the trucks to store the wood used under the jacks for leveling the crane. I used the Tichy tender http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tichy-N-Sca...850097?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item58a08f0731 which has a "box" underneath which I cut to give me 2 compartments per side. I filled them with various sizes of lumber and left the "shed" off. You can see the compartments in the diagram Oregon Truck posted. The tenders for the steam cranes had the water tanks and bunks off of steam loco tenders mounted to them (also shown in Oregon Trunks pics)

MRL I'm modeling a 1964- to a what if BN where they merged on paper. I'd rather a diesel over steam, as I'd need to buy a tender.

    Thanks, OT!

X-11 it is then, until I build my dream layout a small single crane train with a couple cars will work. The only problem now is that the sleepers have a different window shape than the MOW cars. I wonder if the rivarossi's will make a good stand in or project start.

The list of coaches that were MOW is huge. I bet I can find a MOW that fits what you have. Remeber they were given the leftovers from the parent companies.

OT, That is a huge list to model from. Great information! With N scale the selection of rolling stock for MOW conversion is pretty limited. Those old arched windows are almost impossible to find. There were some old brass car side kits if you can find them on Ebay with the arched windows. MT has yet to come out with a single window coach, but hopefully soon. With paint and decals a close representation can be made.

I modeled the X-530 from an old Rapido caboose. I took off the roof walks and closed up the end cupola windows with siding material. I should have corrected the window arraignment and couplers, but again its just a representation. I will go all out next time as this was sold to a friend.

    DSCF0044.jpg

I just wish I had more time to due some modeling. My MOW fleet is on hold due to the layout work. The Meet N March is the end of this month and I need to get ready for an open house visit. I am attempting to have some scenery work done by then.

#750, are going to make it down to Portland for this N scale meet? Three layout tours and a fun swap.
