Vauclain compound Prairie 1017 can't be five years old; she's still prime passenger power with 79" drivers. Yet she's leaking a lot of steam. That's why she'll be converted into a simple two cylinder engine in 1915. She'll hold down first fast freight, then branch line and local roadswitcher duties, until 1939.

The tenders of the road's newest Mikados held 15,000 gallons of water. They also lengthened some of their standard 13,000 gallon tenders to give them a similar capacity.

I love those rare color steam shots, and the sheen of the graphite on the smokebox front and stack.

I had a bottle of gunmetal paint that emulated that well, but it dried up on me.

And another view, from 1940, between a couple of business cars and the first locomotive(s) ever equipped with dynamic brakes.

They were found to be definitely superior to the 5011 Class of 2-10-4 at speeds up to 29 mph, and only slightly inferior above 29 mph.

A kinda sorta old photo from 10/27/1990 at Harrodsburg, IN, C30-7 8130. There was a time when these seemed to be appearing all over the east.

Something broke into this Santa Fe box car and ate all the sugar that was being shipped in it. Maybe it was "them" ants. [IMG]

I've seen this pic more times than I can count in various books. But I never knew until today that it was a color photo!

The road had a handful of RS-1s. All had steam generators, and all switched at passenger stations.

Love the old Zebra paint scheme. You can tell from this photo that it was silver instead of white stripes. VO-1000 2258 built Oct. 1945 with 4 stacks. Retired June 1971 to MPI June 1971. Marty Bernard photo
