Can anyone clear up my confusion on the color of the ends and roof of the silver Overnight box cars?
I suspect the ends were black and the roof was silver but I have seen some information that indicated that the roof might have been black. Help please. Thank you.

    Research Gone A Muck!

I must needs apologize for the first response...on my part. I went back and reviewed the thread. You asked a fair question and basically got a fantasy thing, response. I noted you've been all over the place with this same question...asked a number of ways. :tb-wacky:

I did an oogle google search and came up with a website that will allow you to research this particular train car. Peter J. McCloskys Southern Pacific Railroad Web Resources Page You'l find various railfans who've posted their pictures. You might get lucky.

I distinctly remember an SP Overnight train. However, this was a piggy back over night'r between San Francisco and Los Angeles. They didn't paint the locomotives or the caboose in any kind of over night'r scheme. Most of the cabooses I remember seeing on the train were the standard cupola types.

I found a picture of a SP overnight train car...a model of said car. Black all the way around. I couldn't lift the image. In reality... There may have been a black and/or silver version of the car. IF...they were cruising the coast line... I don't recall seeing any.

I know this doesn't help. Seems every resource I look into wants to sell me a....book! Someday, we will be able to speed dial in our research question and almost immediately we will find, what we need. Till then we are still stuck with the books. :perr:

A number of sets have been produced in N Scale. I've never gotten to excited about them. Again... I don't remember ever seeing any overnight freight cars plying the SP rails.

I need to quit my research...other things need my immediate attention. The best of luck to you.

    Overnight Boxcars

In the book "Historic Southern Pacific Cars" by Wayner there is a photo on page 42 of a silver painted "Overnight" boxcar. The ends are painted black as is the underframe with the rest of the car including the roof painted silver.
    Hope that helps.

    Overnght box cars

Thanks to all for the help. I am somewhat of a fantasy modeler myself so if I like it, it is correct on MY railroad. I will make my silver Overnight cars with black ends only. No plans for any Overnight locomotives at this time but I do have 2 silver cabooses - one center cupola and one rear cupola. I also have a GP35 in Black Widow colors with oversized SP lettering. All in Z scale.
