I have uploaded some new pictures from the railways in my country. The 6400 series of Railion, one of the largest freight railways of Europe, in the town of Almelo december 2005: Winter in Almelo, with a so called 'Wadloper' passenger train in the distance. This train used to ride the rails in the north, but is also used for a small line in the east these days. The old loco 1312 of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Utrecht, february 2006). Not longer in commercial use, but as traction for museum pieces. The loco has been build in France by Alsthom in the fifties. And here a 'museum piece'. Picture taken in 2005 at Utrecht Centraal Station:
Neat! Got any more? Is there a map, somewhere on the 'Net, showing routes of those railways in your country? Boxcab E50
Some more pictures. The 6400 series of Railion at Almelo: The Hippel, a switcher built in England in the 40's or 50's, former NS, now owned by the railinfra contractor 'Strukton': The first steam engine in the Netherlands was the 'Arend'. It ran the first train in 1839 between Amsterdam and Haarlem. This is a replica from 1939 (?) in the Railway Museum at Utrecht, during a Christmas event (which attracts many visitors):
That switcher is still running after 50 years! Recently they revised a unit, fresh paint, and voila: an almost new switcher.
Well, it were busy engines. They also rode short freight locals. Most of them are completely worn out, but some survived and started a second (or third) life.
<font color="336633">Nice photos Thieu Some of my favourite passenger coaches are the doubledeck ones from the Netherlands.
The old or the new ones? In the 80's NS bought the first DD. These trains are not very nice to ride, the windows upstairs are curved so you get a little dizzy while looking out the window. The new DD is better, there is more space inside and the chairs are more comfortable. But my favorite are the standard Intercity-trains: 1 deck, and enough space to walk and sit.
<font color="336633">These are the coaches i like. http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/nl/car/DD-AR/ddar15.jpg Very striking colours as well
These engines have had several paint schemes: turqoise, blue, gray and yellow. See also http://www.nicospilt.com/Lok1300.htm for many, many pictures of this loco. And is there someone who likes thát doubledeck train??? Well, you will not find many Dutch to support your choice.
<font color="336633">I have never had the "pleasure" of riding in one so I can like it. I have been in a Belgian commuter coach and that was not a nice experience, the seats was like wood! It did have lots of room though, but then all continental coaches have more room than our cramped British gauge stock
Great photos of classic trains in a lovely country. Thank You for sharing them. The museum pieces are outstanding! I had the distinct pleasure of riding the NS many years ago in my youth! CT
By coincidence, I saw this locomotive today running by at Utrecht Centraal Station, when I returned from my lunch walk. They still use the loco for bringing museum pieces all over the country.
Pictures from Friesland We spent this weekend in the northern province Friesland, the country of water, sailing and ice skating. There are also trains! Except for the doubletrack electrified mainline of the Dutch Railways, all the lines are singletrack and dieselized and exploited by Arriva. The last 20 years the passenger schedules are run with the 'Wadloper', a small diesel train that comes in two versions: one or two cars. Starting at the end of this year Arriva will replace them with new Stadler trains (the same as New Jersey Transit has).
