Does anyone have a picture or description of the cab end striping on SP&S VO1000s in the tiger stripe scheme? Specifically #34. I know the "as delivered" scheme had no stripes on the ends and a solid stripe on the sill. Then they seemed to have done solid sill stripes and horizontal safety stripes on the ends, but I've seen some variations with diagonal sill striping too. Then they added the maroon roof and the sills went to dashed lines and the radiator end went to diagonal stripes..........that's the scheme I need to find out what the cab end stripes were. I can't find any pictures that show the cab end. I picked up an Atlas VO1000 and I've chosen #34 since the Atlas model uses a square radiator (vs the oval) and the tiger stripe scheme is my favorite.....I just need to know what to do on the cab end. I don't think any VO's made it into broadstripe paint.

Found a picture of it on Page 27 of Ed Austin's SP&S diesels book, the picture was taken in 1955.

There are 3 stripes along the back of the cab.
The top goes from left to right, with a gap in the middle(the cab door)
The Middle stripe goes all the way across
The bottom stripe follows the top stripes pattern because of a step below the middle stripe.

Hmmmm, on a side note I may have to fudge my era a bit so I can have a pair of VO-1000's I need switchers.

Thanks for the response........I saw that photo, but the photo of 34 at the top is a different version than the one at the bottom of the page (which is the one I'm trying to model). There is a shot earlier in the book that has the end stripes like the one on page 27 but has solid sill stripes......in other words there seems to be a lot of variation. There are a bunch of photos of Alco and EMD switchers with diagonal stripes on the cab end........did the Baldwins follow the pattern? I thought about doing the version with the horizontal stripes and solid sill stripes, but there aren't any stripes (sill or end) in the SP&S switcher decal set for that scheme. NP switcher set maybe? But the tigerstripe is my favorite anyway,

I don't really have a yard on my layout that requires a switcher, and my "on order" S2 was going to be my lone switcher, but the undecorated VO was $30 and I couldn't pass it up.

I'd go for whichever one works best. Once Atlas S2's come out, I'm gonna grab some for the SP&S units most will be in Broadstripe. I'm going to use Ed's book as a reference for everything as I build my fleet both locos and freight cars.

I have most of the SP&S books, and I use them for reference a lot. But I can't find what I need this time. I even looked at the schemes on the SP&SHS site and they didn't help either. I guess if no one tells me otherwise, I'll go with the tigerstripe scheme on the bottom of page 27 of the Austin book and use the horizontal stripes from the top picture.........guess if no one knows what's right, no one can tell me it's wrong later.

Hmmmm, now that I've re read the post and looked. my best guess is that you could do the three stripes or the tiger stripe shown on the back of one of the NW2's or Alco S2's.

I copped out and used the stripes out of the Microscale SP&S switcher decal set. Since I can't find any pictures, I can't say it ISN'T right. I had a minor problem on the cab, so I may pick up a new undecorated cab and redo it anyway. Here's what I came up with.

Hi Dave, Very nice work with the paint and decals! I just found your question about this. I found Bowser's HO release with the squared nose. It shows diagonal stripes. I have no other pictures that would contradict these drawings. Only side and front shots. I know its a bit late, but never too late to change if you desire to. I sure wish Microscale would change their bright yellow to a more prototype tan color. I wonder if an overspray could correct these? One could always weather it a bit to get the correct look? Anyway great work!

Wow Dave, That looks fantastic! I think I'm gonna have to do a VO-1000 now!

Thanks for the info Rick. I had pics of the VOs with horizontal stripes on both ends, as well as pictures of the other switchers with diagonal stripes on the cab. Then I have pics of the VOs with diagonal stripes on the hood end but no cab end photos..........I wondered if they had diagonal on both ends.......now I know. I had a minor issue with the solvaset on the cab, and spare cabs are easy to come by, so I'm thinking of redoing the cab, so now I can do the diagonal stripes on the replacement.

I like the way it turned out, but I lost the horn......I was holding it in my tweezers when......ping!........it disappeared never to be seen again. This was a weekend project and I ran out of weekend. I'm sure I have a spare horn, but didn't but didn't have time to look. I also still need to do the white on the handrails. I had read the railings were a pain to install (they weren't that bad) so I wanted to do a test fit before I painted and then ran out of time.........still looks pretty good as is.

Yup. I missed it. Was going off a list of recent posts, rather than the entire topic view. :(
