    Hi all,
What is your favourite way of creating tracks em-bedded in roadways ? Not sure if this is the correct term but I think you wil know what I mean. Industrial areas, tramways etc.
Best wishes and have a great 2001.
    John.

Hi John. I just finished 'concreting' my intermodal yard, including the tracks.

I just spread wall filler (Pollyfilla) over the whole area, and before it was set hard, scraped out the flangeways with a tool made from a piece of brass, shaped to smooth the top of the concrete slightly below the top of the rail, and as well as clearing a flangeway. Very simply made, and scraped along the tracks several times, until all was clean. It looks rather like a rail gauge tool.

After it was completely hard, it was sanded and painted 'concrete' colour.

    Should have some photos. soon.

I make my embedded tracks using styrene, making sure that the top of the styrene is slightly lower than the top of the rails (for good contact and easy cleaning).

Below is an example of such a track on my layout :

So how do you cut the styrene to be such a perfect match to the rails?

There was just a great series on imbedded track in the last few month's of MR. You might check out the techniques described there! Happy Modeling!

Easy. I use a sheet of paper and a sheet of carbon paper (upside down). I put the carbon paper first, and then the sheet of paper on the track and run my nail along the track. I get a template on the sheet of paper and cut the styrene using this template. For the styrene located inside the rails, you need to adjust the width according to the required flange width (approximately .040 in. on both sides - or .080 on one side).

It looks to me like Jean-Louis Simonet has one of those "hidden gem" model railroads that should be a feature in "Model Railroader" or "N Scale" magazines! Jean-Louis, send some pictures via e-mail to MR, please! Andy S. would probably love a trip to France this Spring!

I use .020 plastic sheet between and outside the rails, with .020 x .020 strips underneath to elevate below the railhead, leaving around a .0625 flangeway. In certain areas, I use .010 plastic sheet with Holgate & Reynolds brick glued to it to represent brick or cobblestone streets.

Wow... that layout reminds me of Atlantic Street in Boston down by South Station. When I was going to college in the city I spent many hours down at South Station watching the short line that ran in the street. It was great to watch the cars trying to dodge freight.

    Gregg,

I have submitted an article (and many pictures) to MR for the "small layout contest". The results should be known by next April. Hopefully you'll be able to see some of these pictures in MR sometimes this year. In the mean time, I suggest that you visit the traiN'ternet site listed below (several layouts, many pictures).
