    Unless you're never going to uncouple them, I'd give this project a pass and install either Micro-Train or Accu-Mate couplers. Unimates are not a "bump" coupler and DO NOT have an automatic uncoupling action. Most of the Unimates I put in my locos in the past, were for "matched sets" that never ran apart from each other or "Lead Only" units. I have since given up on using Unimates except for my Passenger Locos and I may even not use them for that in the future.

    Just my thoughts on the subject...

    I always thought they would not be very useful...

    Unimates are not boxed. Just remove the old coupler (M/T or whatever) and screw or use original retaining piece to mount the Unimates. These are what I use on my SD70 & 75 MAC because the original MT's interfered with the truck movement. On the SD45's, I use them to reduce unwanted break-aways on long trains.
